I'm trying to get plasma/X.org working with one gpu bound to vfio-pci, but X fails to start.
My system has an nvidia 1070 and an AMD r9 390, with two monitors, both connected to the AMD gpu by displayport connections, and the larger 1440p monitor connected to the nvidia card by HDMI. I had a working KDE plasma desktop with the nvidia and amdgpu drivers installed per the wiki. It seemed like the nvidia driver was doing most of the autoconfiguring and somehow controlling the setup. For instance, the GPU listed in the System Settings menu was the 1070. I did some monitoring of /sys/kernel/debug/dri/{0,1}/clients and couldn't understand why but I saw that different KDE applications were assigned to each dri which corresponded to either the 1070 or 390.
I need to bind the 1070 to the vfio-pci driver so I can perform passthrough. I have it bound, but after doing so, X fails to start from the terminal. If I can get this working then I plan to have two options at boot, 1) with the 1070 available for desktop use, 2) 1070 for vfio passthrough.
I use 'startx' from user-arch on the framebuffer console to initiate the X server.

exitThe way that the EFI VGA device is passed to grub then to the kernel behaves strangely, but I do not know if it is the cause of my problem. I cannot select my 'boot gpu' in the UEFI motherboard settings. I recently setup the crypto_keyfile.bin to allow boot to continue past the prompt for unlocking the root luks partition, in case of problems with framebuffer console. I have used video=efifb:off to prevent efifb from binding to the passthrough gpu. I have used fbcon=map:1 to make the framebuffer console display on my amd gpu outputs.
For clarity I should limit some of the many permutations to additional posts. I think the UEFI firmware selects a boot gpu depending on whether a monitor is plugged in. Then also, if monitors are plugged into multiple GPUs, it seems to select one output from each monitor to put the boot password prompt. When I boot, the UEFI firmware presents a boot password prompt on HDMI-1-1 and DP-2-1. Unless HDMI-1-1 is unplugged, then the firmware presents boot password prompt on DP-2-1 and DP-2-3. Sometimes the system has /dev/fb0 and /dev/fb1. Sometimes /proc/fb contains an EFI VGA entry and amdgpufb.
Do I need to remove the nvidia package completely: 1) for vfio-pci passthrough and 2) to remove kernel taint?
This seems like a modesetting autoconfiguration problem. I'm not seeing any EDID messages in my Xorg.0.log . Is it possible the amdgpu isn't working in the same way the nvidia driver was? Do I need to write an xorg.conf for this setup? Would the best way be to take a few steps backward, get dual gpu plasma desktop working, produce an xorg.conf from there, then use it to fix whatever my current problem is?

Xorg still tries to use the defunct nvidia card as the primary output.
Minimal xorg.conf that should plain fix this

Fixed! My attempt fix the problem when I had written /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-amdgpu.conf but I chose the incorrect config entry Driver "amdgpu" (WRONG).
What I've learned in the modesetting driver is different from a driver called xf86-video-amdgpu and that is also different than the kernel driver amdgpu.
Also for confusion's sake, the Identifier config string can be chosen differently; it is NOT referring to the amdgpu driver.

Those conclusion sound correct, yes the Identifier can be freely chosen, it's for xorg internal config purposes without actual effect on anything else (... other than Monitor sections, which do need the identifier matching the name as the driver detects them)
