[solved] TW2 The Witcher 2 (Steam) fails to launch

I just updated Arch after 7 months away. after I did, The Witcher 2 no longer launches. it ran fine for years, but now, after the initial screen where one selects "options" or "launch game," the game crashes on launch.

I've tried using proton, but get even worse results (the initial options dialog doesn't even open).

I've installed all dependencies (mainly needed for the GoG version) to be safe.

kernel (mani and lts) are up to date as is nvidia driver.

has anyone else experienced this?

here is the output when I run steam-runtime

edit:
my version of nvidia-dkms and lib32-nvidia-utils do not match. could this cause the seg fault?

nvidia-dkms is:
510.47.03-03

lib32-nvidia-utils is:

510.47.03-1
