I can't seem to find a way to possibly update the SN850 NVME SSD's firmware on Linux. Am I missing something?

I don't think you are. WD doesn't seem to have a plain firmware download and only offer their software for windows. I was also disappointed by this and should maybe have done more research.
I managed to update firmware using a windows 10 virtual machine and passthrough the SN850. I installed the WD software to download and update the firmware. I also enabled 'game mode'.
I only experienced mild funkiness, like I needed to completely reboot my host to get the game mode change to be verified by the WD software. Secondly, the namespace number changed until I rebooted.
I also discovered that namespaces are not an implemented functionality and it's probably just a fast simple drive.
Anyway, if you have a friend with Windows and a usb stick, the WD software will make a bootable USB stick for the firmware update. I made one for FW Rev 614900WD, which was an update for my drive. I updated the firmware before storing any data on it but that didn't seem to be a requirement.
If you are interested and have a place for me to upload the 200 MB usb flash iso for FW 614900WD I could.

Dang, foiled again by WD...
Well its good to know that you were able to update the firmware by passing through the device. I might end up doing that then.
As far as I'm aware, consumer drives only implement one namespace. You need enterprise drive controllers for multiple namespaces.
Thanks for the USB iso offer. I'll keep it you in mind if I end up having trouble passing it through.

@squeaks did you run into any problems with the latest firmware FW 614900WD like the folks at framework have/had?

Hi everyone, I just used instructions from these posts to successfully update my SN850X, I assume it works the same for the SN850:
https://community.frame.work/t/western- … oard/20616
https://community.wd.com/t/firmware-upg … x/210120/9
So use the instructions from the first post to find the .fluf firmware file (check the 'Unlisted Drive' section), then use the commands from the second post to actually install it without having to go through the trouble of having to flash a USB device.
Edit: The Arch Wiki also has the instructions from the second post, with some extra details: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Solid_ … are_update

Please create a "Western Digital" subsection in https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Solid_ … are_update and link to this guide so that others can find it too.
