pacman strange behavior (SOLVED)

I installed Arch bare and I am liking it. I set up pacman "to the book" but it is behaving rather "strangely". When I am installing a package it DLs one item then books out with a message "Failed Downloading . . . " then it locks. Each time I have to go to /tmp and delete pacman.lck then rerun the instllation and it does this up to about the last 3 items of which I get the message "Failed Downloading . . . " then it searches the next repo and processed to DL and install. Could it be something with my config? Do I have to disable the other repos?

Re: pacman strange behavior (SOLVED)

try using wget.

check /etc/pacman.conf

you will see a comented line that starts with

#XferCommand = wget

install wget, and then uncomment that line.

Youshould also open a bug in the bugtracker

Re: pacman strange behavior (SOLVED)

also aria2 is a good option as it makes more than 1 connections to get the same file. link

From my experience that seems to happen when some of the mirrors have not fully synced yet.

Re: pacman strange behavior (SOLVED)

Check whether you have decent mirrors on top of files in /etc/pacman.d/ (not nethat, e.g.).

If it's only a question of a download manager, you could also try snarf or curl.

Re: pacman strange behavior (SOLVED)

That is strange behavior. You are more likely to see a repo time out than for a transfer to die in the rear so frequently.

Have you tested tcp throughput on that network card? Are there any other errors occurring in the logs or on the interface itself?

Honestly, it doesn't sound like a pacman issue, especially if you have tried alternative software for package retrieval. Like I said, even if you had stale or unreachable mirrors, you are more likely to just get a general time out.

I'm having the same problem.  It looks like not being able to retreive the filesize is causing pacman to dump.

Re: pacman strange behavior (SOLVED)

That doesn't look like the same issue ... if the only problem you are having is what you posted ... and it isn't locking up on you like the problem described by kawa, then I would say you are experiencing something completely different.

Did you perform:

pacman -Sy

Prior to the command you posted? or even better:

pacman -Syu

To ensure pacman and the system is up to date?

I imagine what you have posted gets posted rather regularly, here is another:

Also, from other posts, it is suggested that you remove this repo:

I am yet to try snarf or curl.

How do I use them? Hopefully I do not have to select and download the files manually

Re: pacman strange behavior (SOLVED)

before you go that far ... what happens when you:

wget ftp://some.site/some.large.file

and or:

wget http://some.site/some.large.file

?

I'd be more inclined to isolate why the standard retrieval mechanisms aren't working for you first.

Cool, here goes . . .

The retreival works. I have had no problems when it is ftping i.e the speed is relatively ok and no time outs. It always gets a file when it needs to DL. The problem is if I need to get more than 1 file, it gets the first file then I get that message and it quits on me. I then have to delete the pacman.lck and run

pacman -S xx

again. It then gets the next file, file number 2, with no hassles but fails again to get, this time, file number 3. And this goes on untilthe last file and it appears the last 2 files are then retreived without pacman bailing out on me and it installs no problem.

You can now imagine me trying (which I did) to install Gnome using such a method.

Re: pacman strange behavior (SOLVED)

Does this happen with all mirrors?

I'm not sure if pacman initiates concurrent connections (As in attempting to connect before a complete disconnect from the previous transfer) but it seems either the mirror is throttling your connection or there is something preventing pacman from removing it's lock.

Just curious, have you done a:

pacman -Sy pacman

I have just run pacman -Sy pacman and I am looking for something to DL and test. I have commented out all the repos and left Server = ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/current/os/i686
in current and Server = ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/extra/os/i686 for extra. Let me try now and see what happens.

Re: pacman strange behavior (SOLVED)

damn ... that really doesn't maker a lot of sense. Assuming no errors with the card/network ... I'd start leaning towards something between you and the mirror. Even then I can't really think of much outside of dodgy firewall/config or dodgy transparent proxy.

Sorry, I gotta run but I will have a think.

Re: pacman strange behavior (SOLVED)

I would like to believe my card is working fine since I can do major upgrades in Debian but what I have noted is that for Debian my mirrors are all http:/

deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free

Let me try using the mirrors with http:/ and see how things work out. Come to think of it, I had problems upgrading using slap-get in slackware where ftp:/ mirrors were concerned.

I have seen what pacman wants on my pc:

wget works with the http mirrors, using the ftp ones it tries an anonymous connection and hangs.  roll

My pacman now works wink
