Audio and System Problems

Hi, I'm pretty new to linux and am running into some problems. I'm running i3 on top of Plasma and every time I use my volume keys, I have to click them twice for them to work. On the first click it mutes all audio (and I think crashes audio on the computer in general as terminal commands such as running "pactl list" mutes all audio and hangs until I press the volume key again). I think the problem lies with pulseaudio or alsa but I have no idea how to troubleshoot those. The terminal (im using kitty) also randomly freezes and only unfreezes when the volume keys are pressed. Any help would be appreciated!

Where is the hotkey mapped to? The plasma-pa plugin? How are you logging in/starting the session? Post the outputs of

loginctl session-status
systemctl --user status pulseaudio
