I have Kodi installed on a NAS box (Intel 8th gen). I don't use pulseaudio or pipewire, just plain ALSA with an asound.conf.
The analog audio out from the mobo speaker port is connected to a vintage amplifier.
Every time I hit an arrow key when browsing the kodi menu, an unpleasant static crackle comes out of the speakers, even if kodi/alsamixer is on mute.
I tried disconnecting all USB devices and the video output, but the sound was still there.
I bought a used Asus Xonar STX card and configured it as the default device in /etc/asound.conf.
The sound did not disappear. I'm sure that the amp is fine. I've tried different RCA inputs and no other device
causes this behaviour.
I have a similar problem on my 4th gen desktop PC, which is connected to a different headphone amp.
There is a high pitched (several kHz) quiet beep on mouse movements,
and this beep gets carried on the PC ground (both audio and USB grounds),
so a USB DAC carried the beep and only a TOSLINK DAC got rid of it.
I really want to use onboard/Xonar audio to change the preamp volume remotely as my amp doesn't have a remote.
Could a different PSU or a ground loop transformer help? I have access to an oscilloscope if that's of any use.
