[SOLVED] KDE panel transparency doesn't work

Here's a video showing the issue: https://youtu.be/VPtnlLBJvv0

Note: when Konsole suddenly becomes transparent (and vice-versa) is when I use the hotkey to toggle compositing.

This broke when KDE got rid of the xrender compositing option, so clearly something is wrong with my installation (graphics drivers?). I've scoured the internet after a LOT of Googling and haven't been able to find any solutions. I've even tried zen-kernel to switch things up a bit to no avail. Anyone know how to fix this or at least why it's happening?

Here's the relevant part of my ~/.config/kwinrc:

[Compositing]
GLCore=true
GLTextureFilter=0
LatencyPolicy=Low
OpenGLIsUnsafe=false

The relevant packages I have installed:

$ yay -Q | grep 'mesa|intel|nvidia|vdp|libva|video|egl'
egl-wayland 2:1.1.9+r3+g582b2d3-1
eglexternalplatform 1.1-2

Some glxinfo

$ glxinfo | grep render
direct rendering: Yes
    GLX_MESA_query_renderer, GLX_MESA_swap_control, GLX_NV_float_buffer,
    GLX_MESA_copy_sub_buffer, GLX_MESA_query_renderer, GLX_MESA_swap_control,
Extended renderer info (GLX_MESA_query_renderer):
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620 (KBL GT2)
    GL_ARB_compute_variable_group_size, GL_ARB_conditional_render_inverted,
    GL_IBM_multimode_draw_arrays, GL_INTEL_blackhole_render,
    GL_NV_conditional_render, GL_NV_copy_image, GL_NV_depth_clamp,
    GL_ARB_compute_variable_group_size, GL_ARB_conditional_render_inverted,
    GL_INTEL_blackhole_render, GL_INTEL_performance_query,
    GL_NV_compute_shader_derivatives, GL_NV_conditional_render,
    GL_EXT_render_snorm, GL_EXT_robustness, GL_EXT_sRGB_write_control,

    GL_NV_compute_shader_derivatives, GL_NV_conditional_render,
    GL_OES_element_index_uint, GL_OES_fbo_render_mipmap,

My /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ is empty and glxgears works (so Opengl should be working). Oh, and I can't use an external monitor at greater than 1920x1080 resolution (it won't light up). I can provide more configs and info if needed. Thanks a bunch in advance smile

Re: [SOLVED] KDE panel transparency doesn't work

Remove xf86-video-intel it is and always has been a buggy mess on newer than sandybridge GPUs, and I'm even pretty sure that the transparency or at least certainly the blur effect is explicitly blacklisted when using it within KWin because it's so broken.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE panel transparency doesn't work

This looks more like the QML windows aren't rendering - the transparency/blurring etc. of kwin seem to work.
What plasma theme is this and if it's not Breeze, does breeze work?
If not, does it work if you "export QT_QUICK_BACKEND=software" to plasmashell?

Re: [SOLVED] KDE panel transparency doesn't work

@seth it's breeze-dark, but breeze doesn't work either. How would I go about exporting that to plasmashell? I've tried running that and then "kquitapp5 plasmashell && kstart5 plasmashell &" right after but that doesn't seem to change anything.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE panel transparency doesn't work

You can inspect

tr '\0' '\n' < /proc/$(pidof plasmashell)/environ

to se whether teh export got picked up.
In doubt omit "kstart5".

Re: [SOLVED] KDE panel transparency doesn't work

Looks like it did pick it up, but it still isn't working:

$ tr '\0' '\n' < /proc/$(pidof plasmashell)/environ | grep software
QT_QUICK_BACKEND=software

Re: [SOLVED] KDE panel transparency doesn't work

@seth thank you so much! I checked with a fresh account and it was fine, so I tried deleting my "~/.config/kwinrc" and that worked too, so I started isolating every line in it. Turns out I had a plugin installed:

[Plugins]
hide-titlesEnabled=true

that was causing the issue. Now everything works as it's supposed to again (with the exception of my external 4k monitor still not turning on at 4k resolution). Thanks for your help!
