I have installed the java-based Cgoban 3. I also have the stand-alone .jar file. Both should work with sound but neither outputs sound of any sort. It's very odd. So as not to completely duplicate a previous call for help I'll paste what I posted to Reddit here.
From this thread:
https://www.reddit.com/r/baduk/comments … ?context=3
I do NOT have Pulse Audio installed. I did, however, end up having to install Pipe Wire. Audio works fine for Youtube, SuperTux, Retux and almost everything else. Cgoban continues to refuse to give sound when stones are played, though.
I did try to make a file, specifically to force alsa to use certain settings as per a user on the Arch forum, and it worked for Supertux but not Cgoban 3:
~/.alsoftrc
[general]
drivers = alsa
[alsa]
device = defaultThe client works just fine and I installed KDE Plasma just so that I had a floating DE that worked with the client's windows. Not sure I'll keep that part but the underlying issue remains that stones do NOT give me sound (nor does anything else) in Cgoban 3.
I was originally relying on Alsa alone but found that Pipewire was more consistent and needs less tweaking, IE none at all so far for Supertux. Other games, like Xonotic, seem to work fine with this laptop.
My hardware is as follows:
Dell Inspiron 15 5510 (relatively new model I believe)
CPU: 11th Gen Intel i5-11320H (8) @ 4.500GHz
GPU: Intel TigerLake-LP GT2 [Iris Xe Graphics]
Memory: 2558MiB / 15746MiB
Kernel: 5.15.24-1-lts
Paste Bin output from alsa-info.sh also here: https://dpaste.com/4UAF6CHNB
It was suggested by another user in the Reddit thread to make sure the output for sound was directed to Cgoban (using pulseaudio). While a good suggestion, after installing PA, I found that I couldn't easily do so. Also, to make matters worse, PA screwed up Firefox websites rather badly making some of them unresponsive. Youtube, for example, wouldn't start videos for up to a minute. That said, I think I'd like to stick with Pipewire if only because it is meant to replace PA anyway according to the Arch Wiki.
Someone also suggested I pre-pend a command-line instruction to see if the game works with sound that way by doing this with PA:
padsp java -Dsun.java2d.uiScale=2 -jar <path to cgoban.jar>
However that again uses PA and I don't know how to do this with Pipewire.
[edit] It seems I do have some form of PA installed and I can use the above command. I tried it but no sound even still with that.
Thank you for any replies.
