Hello, I have a good old GT 730 First Edition which has good compatibility with Nouveau drivers as I'm aware of. I'm using "nvidia-390xx" drivers from AUR right now, since Nvidia dropped support for this card.
My question is would it be better if I used Nouveau because Firefox doesn't have NVDECODE support, so CPU does the job while watching videos and such. I don't know if there will be performance loss while playing games or compatibility issues with other apps. I wanted to take your opinions and suggestions before trying it.
Thanks in advance.

There are generally basically no benefits to nouveau if you have working nvidia drivers, even if it's just the "old" nvidia-390xx branch, unless you'd want to use wayland, but there are often a few lower level problems in nouveau's GL implementation that can make this an issue anyway. The better option would be to switch to nvidia-470xx if this is a real 730 GT that's technically still a Kepler card. To know whether that's the case look at/post the identifier from lspci. If it's GFxxx then it's Fermi and you need to stay on nvidia-390xx if it's GKxxx it's Kepler and you could actually update to the 470xx branch which will have nvdec support and you could then opt for https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/nvid … driver-git to enable VAAPI for firefox and the like.

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately it's a Fermi card. I'll stay on propriatery drivers until buying a new one.
