(Wayland) Missing Text in certain GTK programs

So, all the text is missing in some GTK programs. Not related to the GTK version, not related to if I start it via Wayland or XWayland, no error messages, no idea what's going on.

The programs with missing text:
- gparted (gtk3)
- lxappearance (gtk2)
- gtk3 popups in typora (like the file picker and dialog boxes)
- deadbeef-git (gtk2)

Other programs with working text:
- pcmanfm (gtk3)
- virt-manager (gtk3)
- helvum (gtk4)
- deadbeef-git (gtk3)

A few pointers would be really helpful, I kinda need gparted.

Re: (Wayland) Missing Text in certain GTK programs

Could take a while to get to the bottom of such an issue. Not sure where to start for debugging this properly. But if you need gparted in a hurry you could download its live ISO and even boot that from your machine to get you going. On a side-note, if you're seeing this on both Wayland and Xwayland, perhaps the reference to Wayland in the title is a bit misleading. It attracted my attention though :-)

Well, since XWayland can't perfectly recreate XOrg behaviour, I thought it might be important. Can't really think of anything else.

About the live iso: I actually already have that, thanks for the info though.

Does the problem appear with a new user?  If not, it's your configs / themes.

Re: (Wayland) Missing Text in certain GTK programs

Thanks, that solved it! It was the DPI config in .config/xsettingsd/xsettingsd.conf. It seems that some programs don't like other DPIs than the default. Why though? That doesn't seem like something that should be happening.

To be clear, only not setting the DPI works. not 96 DPI, not 92, not 128, not 192, not anything else. It's weird, really.

Anyway, one thing I noticed is that all of the programs that have this issue start in XWayland regardless of envvars.

Interestingly, if I set the same value via .Xdefaults, it works as intended (though sway + X11 scaling are adding up, so it's not a solution)
