Popping sound QEMU-KVM using USB device when playing games

Hello!

I'm not really sure if that's a good place, but I don't really know where else to ask..
I've made a QEMU-KVM virtual win10 machine, using single GPU passthrough - and it works like a charm, nothing is laggy etc.

However, for some reason, when I'm using my USB headphones, I'm getting these random pops in them..
I've read lots about it, most of issues were about PulseAudio server, but I'm not using any Linux audio server while passing through an USB device - I've checked it to be sure, killed all audio servers on the host, and the audio was still working under Windows.
I've tried ofc every possible solution for Windows, updating drivers, disabling sound effects, removing app audio takeover.. the popping is still there unfortunately.

If I output the audio to the GPU's HDMI audio - there's no popping
I've outputed the audio to my mobo's sound card - no popping either
And no, while using the headphones under Linux - there's no popping either

One thing I was able to capture was Latency Monitor output, which indicated huge spikes in audio latency, when playing games. (I haven't noticed it when playing media)
I doubt it's a Windows-strict issue, I suspect I have something wrong in my QEMU machine config.. but I can't see what it might be..

I've updated my PC BIOS too, just to make sure HW-wise everything is alright. Linux and every package is up-to-date.

Having that said - is there anyone that had simmilar issue? Or can you help me out to figure out the culprit?

My machine's specs (and the specs I'm giving out to he VM) are 32(16)GBs of RAM, 6(5) cores with 2 threads each

Best regards!

Re: Popping sound QEMU-KVM using USB device when playing games

I've experienced similar issues with my setup (https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PCI_pa … PulseAudio). Tried both ICH9/usb-audio, latency settings, software mixing, and even MSI interrupts. Still had crackling/popping noises when sounds were playing.

I ended up following the Scream section and that has worked great so far. The only issues I've had are from switching devices while the VM is online. If I switch from built in audio to my FiiO K5PRO, I start to hear a ~1-2 second delay on the host of the guest's audio. This is fixed by rebooting the VM.

Hmm.. I was thinking about using host's audio server, but that would be quite annoying to setup - my headphones are steelseries arctis, and they have this nice feature of being double sound device (one output for chat things, one for the media things) - but I might as well try it.. Thanks for the tip!
