Doing a
speaker-test -c2
, I hear same sound on both sides of my headphones even though it shows
0 - Front Left
then waits while playing a sound
then shows
0 - Front Right
then waits while playing a sound.
Also, I can't hear the voices in songs. I tried the headphone on a different laptop and everything works fine.
How do I fix this?

Tell us more about how the headphones connect to the computer. Are you using a phone plug? Is there an extension cable? Does the headset have a microphone?

@ewaller Thanks for your reply.
Yes, I connect them directly via a phone plug. The headset doesn't have a microphone.
The issue is on an HP Pavilion dv7-4083cl .
I don't really know what information I must provide.
$ asoundconf list
Names of available sound cards:
HDMI
MID
I can only get ANY sound if I set the MID card with `asoundconf`
If I set the card as HDMI, the speaker test throws an error
$ speaker-test -c2
speaker-test 1.2.6
Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1032:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -16,Device or resource busy
Also, I cannot see any bar in alsamixer to control the specific left and right for headphones.

Sounds like a common headphone hardware defect (cable/plug/socket). Try to wiggle/turn the cable slightly near the endpoints (and along the full length) or try different headphones on the laptop for testing. Also test the headphones on a different device.
