VDI VirtualBox virtual disk expansion not recognized by arch.

Hello! I run Arch on an Oracle VirtualBox vm and I need more disk space. When I first created the vm I assigned only 8gb but I have run out of space. I expanded the vdi's size using the virtualbox gui tool under Virtual Media Manager to 50gb but arch does not recognize them. I have already tried rescaning the disk with

echo "- - -" >/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:07.1/host0/scsi_host/host0/scan

for every disk but it did not work. Any ideas on how to get Arch to use the extra disk space?

you expanded the disk, but what about the partition? The filesystem? Check with fdisk/gdisk first.
