Dual display issues with taskbar, desktop - LXDE, nvidia

Dual monitor issues after switching to LXDE - any advice appreciated

Previously, I was running OpenBox/tint2 with LXDM, very bare bones. I started to wish for a few missing features. I installed LXDE with pacman -S lxde (full 'meta-package' or whatever it's called)

I'm running into a few issues now, all related to dual monitors:

  • If I right click on desktop -> desktop preferences, I can set wallpaper. I choose a 3840x1080 wallpaper and select 'use the same wallpaper on all desktops' and 'stretch to fill the complete screen' - this results in the wallpaper changing on only one of my monitors. I can right click on the second monitor and configure its wallpaper independently, the settings do not carry over. I've tried all other stretch/fill settings, none of them affect the other monitor.

  • If I right click on the 'window list' panel in LXPanel and select 'task bar (window list) settings', then check the box for 'only show windows on the same monitor as the taskbar' the setting has no effect. LXPanel is treating my two monitors as one big display. The clock is only on the right monitor, the 'start button' is only on the left monitor. Windows on the right monitor show up on the taskbar on the left.

  • Both of my monitors have a trash can icon on the desktop.

It seems like some parts of the system recognize that I have two monitors and some don't. For instance, windows maximize correctly, they only fill one monitor. If I drag a maximized window from one monitor to the other, it 'snaps' correctly.

I originally assumed that this was related to some old OpenBox config, but I believe I've got it all cleared out

I've seen some similar but different problems that were solved by running an xrandr command that I don't understand, I've been scared to try it

My /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ directory is empty. I'm not sure anymore if that is good or bad. I apparently didn't need anything in there for OpenBox

Here is some info about my system-

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GP106 [GeForce GTX 1060 6GB] (rev a1)

I installed 'nvidia-settings' and it shows that I have two monitors with correct positioning, both set to 'X screen 0' which I'm not sure is significant or not

Screenshot of my desktop: (EDIT: The wallpaper here is set independently on each monitor, with different 'stretch' settings that seem to affect left-right justification - but this illustrates the taskbar issue)
