Macbook pro 2008 archlinux nvidia-340xx drivers black screen.

Hello, iam using Arch Linux on my late 2008 Macbook Pro. I am currently using the nouveau drivers on my macbook which has two GPU's "NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M", and i dont know which one is nouveau using, i have a lot of issues with the nouveau driver. My laptop freezees randomly while using chromium, fireofx playing some low end game or doing nothing. (iam using awesome wm). And it also dosent provide good performance. I tried installing the proprietary nvidia drivers (nvidia-340xx from the AUR) but after i install it and reboot it just shows a Black Screen. I tried the fix from AskUbuntu https://askubuntu.com/questions/264247/ … 573#613573 , but it dosent seem to work for me because there are around 5 PCI Express Bridge for me, after setting the PCI-E registers of the express bridge below one of my gpu's it just outputs 0a for the PCI Express Bridge and it outputs 7 for the gpu, after that i tried rebooting and still a black screen.

So that's my problem, Can anyone help me out, so i can run proprietary nvidia drivers on my macbook?

Re: Macbook pro 2008 archlinux nvidia-340xx drivers black screen.

The 340xx drivers do not support the current 1.21 version of xorg-server
https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers … a_id/3142/

You'd have to install a 1.20 version of the server (there's a package in the AUR, but idk. how well they're maintained) - simply fishing one out the ALA might not work because of ABI incompatibilities w/ recent toolchain updates.

Re: Macbook pro 2008 archlinux nvidia-340xx drivers black screen.

There's also https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 5#p2002365 but please notice that you run the driver against an ABI incompatible server.
It might work or might seem to work but cause unexpected behavior at some point.

Otherwise you're left with nouveau, I'm afraid. Yes.

Re: Macbook pro 2008 archlinux nvidia-340xx drivers black screen.

Should i try to give Nobara Project a try? Or is it uselss? Will the nvidia drivers work on that distro? Might be asking a dumb question, if iam, please forgive me...

I saw a comment on This Video saying it the nvidia 340xx driver work with there machine in fedora and debian.

They used a patcher for running legacy drivers on newer kernels.

Update: I got the nvidia drivers working with that patch, but now i have another problem, when i try to open the tty its a black screen and when i switch back to gui with ctrl+alt+F1 it returns to gui, is there any way to fix this? Another problem i have is the windows are glitchy when i move the windows they are a bit glitchy and weired things happen.

Re: Macbook pro 2008 archlinux nvidia-340xx drivers black screen.

The driver will work w/ a sufficiently old kernel and Xorg version - regardless of the distro.
(Though arch is certainly not optimized for using dated software)
The kernel patch is actually the smaller problem.

now i have another problem … weired things happen

Please post an updated xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

Re: Macbook pro 2008 archlinux nvidia-340xx drivers black screen.

I think iam gonna stick with nouveau, since that's the only best option I have right now. Iam gonna mark this solved

Update:- i take it back, iam gonna do more research until i get the nvidia drivers fully functioning on my macbook pro 2008 model.

heres the log output i got

[    52.490] (--) Log file renamed from "/var/log/Xorg.pid-541.log" to "/var/log/Xorg.0.log"
[    52.522] (==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Tue Apr 12 16:16:17 2022
[    52.740] (II) systemd-logind: logind integration requires -keeptty and -keeptty was not provided, disabling logind integration

and heres my full xorg log

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/SamTh … Xorg.0.log

also btw i have installed the nvidia drivers on archlinux by following the fedora guide, i havent switched to fedora.
