[SOLVED] GTK4 / Libadwaita programs displaying content incorrectly

I have been having an issue where GTK4 / libadwaita programs are displaying incorrectly. The content of windows feels poorly spaced, overly cramped and with little distinction between headers and normal text. Really looks bad compared to similar content in GTK3 which is very clearly and nicely displayed. I have taken a screenshot to show the issue in the new GNOME 42 System Settings and in the libadwaita demo: Screenshot

To be clear, this was also an issue before I upgraded to GNOME 42, it is just far more intrusive now that more GNOME apps have transitioned to GTK4 / libadwaita. I am also having no issue with any other programs; GTK3 and QT5/6 programs are displaying as expected.

I have tried re-installing libadwaita and I have tried removing my ~/.cache ~/.config and ~/.local directories to try and rule out user configuration problems, but the issue has persisted. The issue also persists regardless of whether or not my gnome extensions are enabled. I also tried creating a new user just to be doubly sure and it was still a problem when logged in as the new user. X11 or Wayland makes no difference either. I have tried searching online for people with similar issues, but haven't found any reference to a similar problem, which leads me to assume it must be something misconfigured or missing from my system.

Possibly relevant is that I recently switched from KDE Plasma to GNOME (i.e. this was not a GNOME install on a 'fresh' system). I have not noticed any other issues that I would have attributed to this transition, and I believe I have now removed most if not all of the leftover KDE packages, but I'm not sure how / if any KDE remnants might have an impact on my system.

Thanks in advance for any help or insight! This is my first time posting here, so apologies if I've put this in the wrong place.

Re: [SOLVED] GTK4 / Libadwaita programs displaying content incorrectly

Turns out the problem was that I had 'GTK_THEME=Adwaita:dark' set in my '/etc/environment' file from when I first installed GNOME and was trying to figure out how to get a consistent system-wide dark theme, and this is what was causing the problems with GTK4 / libadwaita apps. Removing this line and rebooting solved my problem!
