Not sure, but my Intel was doing 1920x1080 normally, but now it wants to limit it to 1024x768.
Doesn't matter which kernel I use rt, stock, lts it still doesn't come 1080p.
I thought modeset made a change, but now even that is not changing anything.
I've installed various intel media and vaapi and such but nothing has changed.
Not sure why it doesn't want to do intel now.
Xorg -configure complains about a difference in the number of screens detected. When I do a lspci it seems to show a VGA device and Display controller for what seems to be the same intel 4 series chipset graphics controller. They are using the same i915 driver.

has *nothing* to do w/ the more general inquiry about "what's up about i915 and iris?"
=> open a new thread and there post your xorg log and system journal if you want assistance with this.

I even looked for a iris driver and I can't seem to find one, may not even really help with my intel video driver, but more than likely it is probably an obscurity in having two pci elements showing up in lspci and xorg -configure, so at least that agrees.
Don't think the intel driver is being updated as much anymore also? Some suggest just removing the xf86-video-intel.

Some suggest just removing the xf86-video-intel.
Is often a good idea, but has nothing to do w/ either i915 or iris (the result is the modesetting driver) or even your original problem…

Splitting this from: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=275148
As already mentioned, this will not have much relation to the general question regarding the difference between iris and i915, as such if you need actual help, post xorg logs and information about how your system is set up.

Hmm...files owned by various xf86-video and xf86-input drivers, but also xorg-server.
Let's back out xorg-server one version and see what happens.
Yep, backing up to 21.1.3-5 brought back the 1080p. So something in 21.1.3-6 xorg-server doesn't jive.

I suspect the issue is the xf86-video-intel driver and/or a combination w/ the ck kernel.
Remove xf86-video-intel (and the config referencing it in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d if it's not withdrawn w/ the package), run 21.1.3-6 on the modesetting driver this way and see what happens.

The xorg-server from the newest version has the xf86-video-modesetting driver in it apparently.
There was nothing in the xorg.conf.d related to xf86-video-intel driver. and xf86-video-modesetting has been removed from repos.
Mesa-amber made no difference and the kernel makes no difference. So it seems to still remain something with xorg-server.
I had tried removing xf86-video-intel while under xorg-server and it was apparently already selecting the modesetting driver.

The modesetting driver is part of xorg-server and not subject to potential API/ABI issues - what's the xorg log for the modesetting driver for 21.1.3-6 and 21.1.3-5
Mesa-amber made no difference and the kernel makes no difference. So it seems to still remain something with xorg-server.
The problem is that no EDID for your monitor (really VGA?) is obtained and you're dropped to the VESA modes (which are simply expected to be supported by every output that still can visibly color pixels in 2022)
This has nothing to do w/ mesa, dri, vaapi or any of that.
If anything besides the xorg-server, I'd *certainly* test the behavior on the non-ck kernel as well as https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel … _KMS_start

The kernel doesn't matter. Modesetting is now using the crocus driver instead of i915/i965 even though vainfo says it's still using i965. We still have 1080p on -5. Modeset only tries to go to 1280x1024, but the monitor says I can go higher.

Brought xorg-server back to -6 and still have 1080p.
So it's working w/ the modesetting driver?
(The posted xorg log certainly adds "[ 56.796] (II) modeset(0): Modeline "1920x1080"x60.0 148.50 1920 2008 2052 2200 1080 1084 1089 1125 +hsync +vsync (67.5 kHz eP)" from the EDID, but it's not possible to determine the build (-5/-6) from the log.

I figured it would have worked already removing intel driver, but for some reason it didn't earlier. It does show that it was using intel driver earlier when I wasn't getting 1080p. But now it worked either way. Strange. I think I even tried intel-media-driver and libva-intel-driver.

Did you perhaps https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel … _KMS_start ?
I even tried intel-media-driver and libva-intel-driver.
Unrelated to the issue at hand.

I did try early KMS and it didn't change anything, just made the console change earlier and still didn't bring in the 1080p at that time.
