Changing virtual console's resolution on external monitor

I have an external monitor connected to my laptop and its resolution in X is 1920x1080, which is the maximum. When I switch to a virtual console, however, the monitor's resolution automatically becomes 1280x720, while I'd like it to be the same as in the display server.
The laptop's resolution is 1366x768, so I figured out that the other monitor is adapting its resolution to that of the laptop, since the two screens become mirrored when I switch to a virtual console.

Is there any way I can change external monitor's resolution to always be 1920x1080?
