Cannot make ffplay play videos full-screen

After today's update I noticed that I cannot toggle full-screen videos played with ffplay: when I press "f" the window becomes full screen but not the video, which remains the same size in the upper-left part of the full-screen window. Anybody can reproduce this? Any ideea why this happens? I use Gnome on Xorg.

Re: Cannot make ffplay play videos full-screen

Which update did you get "today".  There is a new ffmpeg in staging, but the last update to ffmpeg in the repos was almost a month ago to 2:5.0-6.

Re: Cannot make ffplay play videos full-screen

I am using ffmpeg-2:5.0-6 from one month ago, so I think that the problem has something to do with Gnome 42 update. I did not update for about two months.

Re: Cannot make ffplay play videos full-screen

Post your pacman.log for this update.  You could try downgrading to the archlinuxarchive mirror to narrow down which package update triggered the issue.

In doubt, try to remove any xf86-video-* packages (and configurations referecing them - otherwise X11 will fail to start)

I am using ffmpeg-2:5.0-6 from one month ago

Re: Cannot make ffplay play videos full-screen

[2022-05-01T18:23:26+0300] [ALPM] upgraded sdl2 (2.0.20-1 -> 2.0.22-1)

ffplay uses SDL2. It is very possible that changes made to this library are the cause.

Dependent on the type of WM used, sdl2 video output (x11, wayland).

edit:
Most WMs have a function (assigned shortcut) to make the window fullscreen. Use it.
This can be helpful for temporary deficiencies in SDL2.

Adds up for me: the OP updates rarely, and the update today pulled the version of ffmpeg that was posted to the repos a month ago.  So "since today" the OP is using ffmpeg from one month ago: yesterday they were using an older version of ffmpeg.

In any case, given that so much was updated, it could well be a library / dependency that triggered the issue.  However, latalante1, I'm not sure I follow your logic: the OPs symptoms do not sound like a failure of the WM to fullscreen the window, rather the window *is* properly fullscreened, but the video is not properly scaled to fit that window.

Thanks to all for the answers.

I have tested ffplay playing videos on another computer I updated yesterday and the behavior is the same (ie defective), but when pressing "f" (for full-screen) repeatedly in the video window the video scaled properly in about 10% of the cases. This other computer also runs on Xorg but it runs Openbox.

If I understand correctly what latalante1 is saying, he might be right: if I maximize the window itself (not using "f") the video scales properly, but if I then press "f" the video still does not scale to full-screen, preserving its size.

Other weird behaviors:
- if I stop the video and maximize the window the video does not scale; when I restart playing the video scales to the maximized window;
- one can enter full-screen also by a mouse double-click; after double-click the mouse cursor finds itself exactly on the same position relative to the (unscaled) video on the upper-left part of the screen.

Re: Cannot make ffplay play videos full-screen

FYI, I actually just saw a very similar issue.  For me the video does resize a bit, but not properly.  I update much more regularly, but did have the sdl2 udpate today (and it seemed the only potential candidate in my updated package list).  I downgraded sdl2 to the previous version (2.0.20-2) and ffplay immediately worked again as expected.  I updated sdl2 again and re-confirmed the problem.

I still don't see the connection to the WM though, as the window does fullscreen properly - the video just doesn't scale correctly to that window.

In any case, it seems that downgrading sdl2 in the short term is a viable work-around.

Re: Cannot make ffplay play videos full-screen

Thank you for your investigation, Trilby. I am a little bit confused about what you say regarding WM. I was talking about two different things previously: maximizing the video window ((usng that small button called "Maximize") and entering full-screen mode by pressing "f". Video-window maximizing works properly and the video also scales. What is not working is the full-screen mode by pressing "f". A workaround is to pass "-fs" option to ffplay, then the video plays properly full-screen.

Re: Cannot make ffplay play videos full-screen

I wrote clearly that the most likely cause of the problem is the SDL2 upgrade.

I added that the symptoms for different WMs may be different. The malfunction of the fullscreen may depend on the used sdl2 video output.

For example, under i3-wm it is enough to use `$mod-f`.
Under sway with (xwyland), ffplay works fine (`f`).
For a sway with sdl2 wayland output SDL_VIDEODRIVER=wayland, a different combination must be used first `$mod-f` and then `f`.

Downgrading of SDL2 is not a solution. The next SDL2 2.0.24 release will be in three months from now.
You need to report a bug to sdl2.

Re: Cannot make ffplay play videos full-screen

I do not know how to report a bug, but I can try.
On the other hand, isn't the issue mentioned by Set in #12 already a bug report? They say that the issue was "added to the 2.0.24 milestone".

Re: Cannot make ffplay play videos full-screen

Rather no need to report anymore. Someone has already signaled the bug there.
You have to be patient. Another question is whether the Achlinux maintainer of sdl2 will be willing to include a possible fix.

If you are comfortable with going back to the previous version, roll back.
In my opinion, there is no such need. You can work around this problem with the fullscreen from WM.

Re: Cannot make ffplay play videos full-screen

once, how did you apply this patch?  I just installed sdl2-git from the AUR, and it had no effect at all on the symptoms in wayland (i.e., it behaved just as sdl2 from the repos).

Re: Cannot make ffplay play videos full-screen

That's not quite what I meant: the patch has been applied to the code I just built and installed, and it has no effect in wayland - which is not surprising as it is specifically in X11-only code that will never run on wayland.  So I'm curious what you did that resulted in something different - knowing which code you manually applied this to would be relevant as it's clearly not the git code ... because you couldn't apply it manually when it's already there.

Re: Cannot make ffplay play videos full-screen

Ah, that's what I was asking - you applied that patch to 2.0.22 code.  I'm not sure how much sense that makes as there have been more commits than I bothered to count between 2.0.22 and that patch (in the ballpark of hundreds).  However, I did try to replicate and applied that patch manually to 2.0.22 code, and saw absolutely no difference (again because it's x11 code that will not even execute in a wayland session).  Are you sure something else didn't get changed?  And are you sure you are running on wayland (and also not Xwayland)?
