So yesterday I decided to start a long test on the failing disk: "smartctl --test=long /dev/sda".
The problem is that I don't know how to monitor the status of this test. The output of smartctl does not indicate that a test is being run. However if I try to run another test on the disk:

Re: Smartd has detected ErrorCount

The test runs for as long as the extended polling time is declared i.e. 1923 minutes (... which seems to be quite extensive, but would be around 32 hours)

Re: Smartd has detected ErrorCount

in your output above,

Self-test execution status: ( 247)	Self-test routine in progress...
					70% of test remaining.

log entry is only created when the test finishes or is aborted by host... in the event of a power loss, it's also possible there will be no entry made

Re: Smartd has detected ErrorCount

ok, thanks.
I have to admit that the output of the smartctl command is too technical for me. Too many numbers and cryptic codes (for me).

Another question following the error. It's a disk I bought in January and it's still under warranty, is this error critical, what is it telling me?

199 UDMA_CRC_Error_Count 0x000a 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 1

Is a bus error - most likely cause is <mantra>the cable, maybe loose plugs</mantra>

There's no guarantee that the drive is otherwise healthy, but most likely no other error will come up and you should check the connections.

Re: Smartd has detected ErrorCount

I have done a long test and the result is that there is no error! But nevertheless it still shows that there was an error: https://pastebin.com/CB55DrmW
The disk operates normally. I have checked the connections and they are fine.
Is Smartd's output really reliable?

Re: Smartd has detected ErrorCount

Error 1 occurred at disk power-on lifetime: 2709 hours (112 days + 21 hours)
  9 Power_On_Hours 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 3063

That error was there and 354 runtime hours (14 days on 24/7) ago.

smartctl is reliable until the firmware gets fried, but you'd notice that…
It's impossible to say what caused that UDMA error, but it is a bus error, ie. more likely connection or interference related ("cosmic rays"…) - there's no indication to be concerned at this point.
If the UDMA errors start growing: check the cables (even if properly seated, the cable could be broken - literally)

Re: Smartd has detected ErrorCount

I have the exact same model of hard drive as yours, and the same thing (a single UDMA CRC error out of nowhere) happened to me as well. I installed the drive myself and I'm confident there's no problem with the connection/cabling.

At this point I'm inclined to believe it's probably a minor firmware bug at the drive's end.
