Jacman v0.4 released

Ho ho ho! Happy Christmas!

The only thing I can contribute to the AL community is Jacman. It's been a quiet year (last update was in January!). So here's v0.4 to bring some sparkle and joy to December.

What's New in 0.4?

Nothing too major - largely cosmetic changes. I like to ensure Jacman stays well ahead in the eye candy department. It's not all bling, however. Here's a quick summary:
* New look and feel to the whole application. I think the theme is a lot lighter and
fresher. Look out for nice roll-over effects in tables, lists, buttons (especially with icons), etc, etc.
* More filtering options for install dialog.
* Improved search/filtering performance.
* Install and Update dialogs have coloured columns indicate whether packages are up-to-date or now (a la distrowatch).
* Improved and tweaked a few of other little bits-and-bobs under the hood.

For screenshots, go to the Jacman project page: http://www.andy-roberts.net/software/jacman/index.html

It'll probably take a few days until this update makes its way to the community repository. In the mean time:

Binary pacman package
PKGBUILD

Happy holidays smile

AUR support has been something I've been wanting to implement for ages. The problem is that the AUR database is not made readily available to third party tools like pacman GUIs, which is shame.

Every AUR build tool I've seen generally relies on the user knowing upfront which package they want to query/install. To make it worthwhile doing in Jacman, I'd like to follow the style for the official repos which is to let the user browse/search through all the available packages.

Once DB access, whether it be read-only direct access to the DB, or a text-file export hosted on a server somewhere, then I'll get stuck in with a AUR integration in Jacman.

well... http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/
This will list out all packages, but i don't think it's very efficient by any means...

Re: Jacman v0.4 released

Pacman3 is drawing nearer - providing libalpm with java bindings. You might want to fiddle a bit with that (stab phrakture in the left eye, if you're eager).

Oh yeah, I've known about this for ages. I think it's a nasty hack. It would be rather inefficient. Assuming you want to see more than just a list of package names, then it would also be rather inefficient to crawl through the entire listing, parsing the PKGBUILDs. And after all that you still don't have half the info that appears on the equivalent AUR page.

Yeah, I intend to create a Java wrapper around libalpm once it's stable. That said, Jacman's going ok at the moment without it. I didn't think that pacman3 would have any AUR support and so it's unlikely to help with this particular situation.

Still, I'm looking forward to using the official library rather than my reimplementation of certain package crawling routines.

Re: Jacman v0.4 released

The problem is that I don't have control of jacman on the AUR. There has obviously been a bit of a communication problem and I must have forgot to give dtw the new jacman.sh file.

If you used the Jacman package on my web site then you would be fine because everything was built correctly there.

Dibble, the fix is to update the AUR CVS to include the new shell script, that's all.

My pkgbuild, for the record was:

Re: Jacman v0.4 released

I installed the pkg arooarro linked to in his post. Jacman works fine now.

@ arooaroo - is there a jacman icon somewhere? Can't find it in the usual places (/usr/share/pixmaps or /usr/share/icons), yet I can see that there is an icon for the window menu and the system tray. Can you point me to it so I can use for my launcher I created in the Gnome menu?

Thanks!

Icons are in /usr/share/jacman/icons/

Hmm, I have no directories in /usr/share/jacman. Just have jacman-0.4.jar, that's all.

I installed from arooaroo's pkg.tar.gz using pacman -A jacman-0.4-1.pkg.tar.gz to install (not that this should make any difference).

Odd.  :?

Re: Jacman v0.4 released

I just realized that these files don't belong to any packages. Probably I extrated the files in the jacman.jar directly on my system...

To get the icons, copy the jacman.jar in a temp location and run:
jar -xf jacman.jar
There will then be an icons directory. Copy the icons you want in /usr/share/pixmaps or /usr/share/icons
Maybe arooaroo or dtw will make a new packages with the icons included.

Re: Jacman v0.4 released

Indeed. Everything is in the jar file (which is simply a zip file for those not familiar with Java) so you can grab everything there.

For the next release I'll try and ensure I do some stuff with icons folders and .desktop files, etc.

This is a more fundamental issue with Java, rather than Jacman-specific.

See if the tip in http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … highlight= is useful. I don't use any fancy 3d stuff, and given how experimental it is it seems to be something of a moving target.

[snipped]

This is becoming a comedy for me! smile

Ran the above command from a terminal as user & root and get 'bash: jar: command not found' both times.

Odd again.  :?

I'm doing something wrong. My Java-based apps work, so I would think the PATH is OK. Ideas????

And Gnome's archive manager does not recognize the *.jar files as valid, even though the mime type is registered.

My JRE is 1.5 from the Extra repo...no JDK installed.

Thanks!
