maps.google.com does not function properly in chromium [solved]

I cannot get maps.google.com to display the menu accessible from clicking on the triple lines in the upper left of the "search google maps" search bar when using chromium.  Works fine in firefox.  To rule out something in my chromium profile, I renamed ~/.config/chromium and tried again which created a new profile.  Anyone else observing this?

EDIT: Ah, forgot about ~/.config/chromium-flags.conf which contained '--disable-reading-from-canvas' which is causing this.
