Completely new to i3. I am using xfce4 in /dev/tty7 and I am using i3 in /dev/tty4 . I am using xinit (startx script) to launch i3. I want to add a audio applet icon in i3 bar to manage my sound. How can I do that ? I am using pavucontrol.

So I have to use pasystray instead of pavucontrol ?

Instead?? Use pavucontrol all you like, but if you want a system tray control, you also need a program that provides a pulse audio system tray, one good example is pasystray, another is pa-applet.

Installing the packages will work or do I have to manually add it in my i3 config file ?

You'd have to launch the applet if you want it to run. This could be from your i3 config, or from your xinitrc or similar startup file.
