btrfs free space dropping without cause

I am using btrfs on luks.
metadata=single data=single
2TB SSD
mount options are:
ssd,zstd:5,relatime,space_cache,subvol=@rootfs
kernels linux-5.17.7 and zen-5.17.7

using

btrfs fi usage /

is usually accurate for me, showing my 400+ GB of free space (min and estimated).
the other day, sddm refused to start. I checked the free space. btrfs-progs reported less than 30kb free (min and estimated). I deleted a single ~45GB file, synced the fs, and started sddm.
after removing that single file, the system reported over 400GB free.

I use btrbk to make automatic, rotating snapshots. they hadn't been purged between the unusual space reports.

today, btrfs-progs reported less than 200GB free. the machine doubles as a seedbox, but all torrent software was disabled. I deleted about 15GB of data, and soon after the free space went up over 400GB again.

since deciding to post this, I've watched free space drop from 408GB to 402GB over a 10 minute interval. btrbk has been disabled. there are no processes (that I know of) writing data to the disk. the system is not accessed by any other users. no databases or vms running.
if it is relevant, I use a lot of reflink copies of large media files. I have not defragged the system in months.

what could be causing this, and how might I better investigate it?
