[SOLVED] Archlinux sometimes crashes immediately after login

Hello everyone,

I run gnome on wayland. Immediately after login, sometimes my laptop completely freezes with a grey screen. Mouse completely freezes, I can't switch ttls. Only choice is to power off. This happens around 50% of boots.

Here's last 3 lines I get when running sudo journalctl -b-1 on a successful boot (following a failed one)

kernel: BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 000000000000006c
kernel: #PF: supervisor read access in kernel mode
kernel: #PF: error_code(0x0000) - not-present page

I tried trying linux-lts... no use. I should mention this happened after a pacman upgrade. But I can't tell what's the cause or how to debug it. Any logs/ideas much appreciated. My laptop is nearly unusable at this point and my google attempts have hit a brick wall.

Re: [SOLVED] Archlinux sometimes crashes immediately after login

Does any more related output reach the journal?  If so please post that.  It will look similar to the example from Kernel#Examine_panic_message

Nothing that I can see. I'll paste a few lines up until the reboot

If I can do something to get more extensive logs, please let me know how. Also I presume sudo journalctl -b-1 is the right command here?

Yes that is the right command.  Please post the whole of the journal for that boot.  If it is too big for code tags see pastebin.

Re: [SOLVED] Archlinux sometimes crashes immediately after login

Here you go. I had 2 more panic attacks when I tried to start the computer to get you the logs. I pressed the power button shortly (screen turned black), then I force powered it off. I'm mentioning this because I think I saw "power button pressed shortly" in the logs. However, that didn't change anything. I still couldn't switch ttys or anything

Re: [SOLVED] Archlinux sometimes crashes immediately after login

"pcie_aspm=off", https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters

You can also try to deactivate it for the reelvant link only (your sound chip), https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=264364

Re: [SOLVED] Archlinux sometimes crashes immediately after login

Thanks. Adding that to kernel params worked! Is it worthwhile to try to deactivate it for the particular sound chip?

Re: [SOLVED] Archlinux sometimes crashes immediately after login

ASPM is a power saving mechanism - it's relevant on notebooks, on a desktop its limitation is probably not worth the struggle.
