Time-limited logins

I am an algebra teacher, and I have a computer in my classroom that runs Arch.  I'd like to let students log in and use the computer to surf the web before school, during lunch, or after school, but I don't want to deal with it during class.

I've considered doing this by setting up scripts that are run through cron that would log in the student user and start the graphical desktop at a certain time, and then end the session later.  I wanted to ask if anyone has any experience doing this, and if this is an appropriate strategy, or if I should consider something else.  I figure someone somewhere has done this sort of thing, but I don't know the right search terms to find it, I guess.

Thanks for your help.

John
