when I use scaling in display setting in kde plasma, the resolution of my laptop stays the same as 1080p.
I know wayland has issues with fractional scaling but my question is general scaling so I use a 200% scaling for this test.
when I use wayland and I set the scale to 200% my resolution for some apps goes to half (540p). or at least the seem to see a 540p virtual screen.
for example if I view a 1080p image with qview and tell it to show the image in its original resolution then it shows half of the image and i have to scroll to see the other half too.
I don't think the actual resolution of my virtual screen changes (of course the physical one doesn't change).
because when I try with 300% scale (so a 360p) the text are crisp still, so not like a actual physical 360p screen.
also playing video with mpv shows and showing info in that says resoolution as 1080p.
can I be sure that I am not losing resolution?
with wayland-info command I get this
interface: 'zxdg_output_manager_v1', version: 3, name: 30
xdg_output_v1
output: 43
name: 'eDP-1'
description: 'AU Optronics eDP-1-unknown'
logical_x: 0, logical_y: 0
logical_width: 960, logical_height: 540
interface: 'wl_output', version: 3, name: 43
x: 0, y: 0, scale: 2,
physical_width: 310 mm, physical_height: 170 mm,
make: 'AU Optronics', model: 'eDP-1-unknown',
subpixel_orientation: unknown, output_transform: normal,
mode:
width: 1920 px, height: 1080 px, refresh: 60.049 Hz,
what is the first one (xdg_output_v1)
is that the reason the picture app behaves that way?
how can I be sure that my apps get the full resolution or is wayland scaling somehow achieved with lowering resolution? and how my video player still get 1080p?
mpv is a wayland client.
gwenview (and swayimg) app when using actual picture size shows the picture as whole page, so that app uses 1080p screen.
is it qview issue then?
it seems that every app behaves differently.
and that is with a integer scale.
in fractional scale even gwenview (and swayimg) acts weird.
for example at 150% scale, gwenview (and swayimg) shows the 1080p picture and shown at actual size as a 720p picture.
so the opposite of qview.
at that scale mpv show a scaled 1440p resolution.
I can ignore fractional scale issues for now because it is not fixed in wayland, but can I be sure that scaling doesn't mess with apps and this is the correct behavior and the issue is with the apps (like qview)?
EDIT:
it seems to be a qview issue.
https://github.com/jurplel/qView/issues/374
that was very confusing for me.
now I can be somewhat sure that on integer scaling at least wayland works like Xorg.
that should be a reminder to me to use more apps when testing. but in my defense Xorg picture viewers dont work in wayland, so I have to find more of wayland apps.
