[Solved] Nvidia drivers failing to load after pacman -Syu

I updated my system yesterday, after a week or two having not done it, and now both the proprietary and the nouveau drivers fail to load, and it falls back to unaccelerated graphics.

Notably, in the Xorg log it seems to say that the "nv" kernel module is missing.

Re: [Solved] Nvidia drivers failing to load after pacman -Syu

Welcome to the boards

Please wrap command outputs/file contents in code tags the nvidia xorg module is not present at all here. The main problem will likely be

[ 10.030] (EE) [drm] Failed to open DRM device for pci:0000:01:00.0: -19
[ 10.030] (EE) open /dev/dri/card0: No such file or directory
[ 10.030] (WW) Falling back to old probe method for modesetting
[ 10.030] (EE) open /dev/dri/card0: No such file or directory

the generic fix for that would be to enable early KMS: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel … _KMS_start but to get a better picture post a complete

pacman -Qs 'nvidia|linux'
sudo journalctl -b

to a pastebin or so https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/List_o … n_services also which exact HW is supposed to be in use here?

Re: [Solved] Nvidia drivers failing to load after pacman -Syu

pacman output: http://0x0.st/oMUu.txt

journalctl output: https://0x0.st/oMU1.txt

Hardware is an nvidia GTX 1060 Ti.

I'll try KMS now.

Re: [Solved] Nvidia drivers failing to load after pacman -Syu

nvidia-open on a 1060? Why did you switch to nvidia-open? That would not have been done automatically, and it does not support your hardware.

Ah, I wasn't aware. I made that change myself to try and fix it, I'll revert back now and repost the logs.

Re: [Solved] Nvidia drivers failing to load after pacman -Syu

After replacing nvidia-open with nvidia, and adding the nvidia proprietary options to KMS, my boot process now takes several minutes! Not sure why, I thought it was bricked.

Here is my latest Xorg log file: https://0x0.st/oMUy.json

(I should note that the lengthy boot process was before Xorg loaded, everything after that seemed as usual)

Re: [Solved] Nvidia drivers failing to load after pacman -Syu

Please post the dmesg or system journal for a slow boot.  Which nvidia packages are currently installed?

pacman -Qs nvidia

Nvidia packages: https://0x0.st/oM0o.txt

Dmesg: https://0x0.st/oM0X.json

What do you mean by the system journal?

Re: [Solved] Nvidia drivers failing to load after pacman -Syu

[ 4.063508] traps: Missing ENDBR: _nv011433rm+0x0/0x10 [nvidia]

You forgot to add back ibt=off when you changed back from nvidia-open to nvidia.
The system journal is as the name implies the journal for system events rather than events for a particular user.  Access to the system journal is restricted to root and members of the groups systemd-journal adm and wheel.
