Arch 2.6.19 under VMware server

Hi,
I'm running VMware server 1.0.1 on a windows xp host.
I managed to install arch linux fine (kernel 2.6.19).
However, i cannot get all vmware tools to compile (kernel headers changed recently it seems)

Only two modules fail to compile, the filesystem one and the network driver.
Everything else is working fine as far as vmware tools goes.

However, xorg is not working sad
Running hwd, X refuses to start (without any errors). It tries to start, i can see it changing the resolution, then it bails out. This is with vesa driver. Changing the video driver to vmware does the very same thing.

Also, i did set the hsync/vrefresh to 1 - 10000 as stated somewhere in this forum.
Here is the x11 log under /var/log

Any suggestions?
Also, i have a centrio duo 1.6gz processor and when setting vmware to use 2 cpus, i would get random kernel panics when booting. Setting it to use only 1 cpu fixes this.

I looked at the wiki entry for compiling vmware tools unfortunately because the headers seem to have changed, i cannot get to compile.
Thanks

Re: Arch 2.6.19 under VMware server

The dual core problem happened to me and I don't use VMWare.

When you install use the noapic option. (This is off the top of my head, but the option is described in the install cd)

After you install boot the fallback (the normal image won't boot.)

On the fallback image run this command as root.

mkinitcpio -p Kernel26

More information in this thread. Note that the command was off the top of my head so look into this thread to get the right stuff.

Re: Arch 2.6.19 under VMware server

Regarding the core duo, even with noapic, i still get the kernel panic described in that thread because my host os is often under heavy usage. To make it boot without panic, i need to kill most processes on my host os. This is more easily achieved is i set the vm to use a single processor (dual cores need to send twice as many timer interrupts).

Concerning xorg, i managed to get it working after installing a window manager. For some reason, simply running startx without a window manager would have it die. I used to recall from memory that i was supposed to be able to do this but i haven't used linux in a long while so i may be wrong.

I still cannot get the vmware tools to compile with the new kernel but i suspect the vmware people will be working on this.
Thanks for the reply.

Re: Arch 2.6.19 under VMware server

I had the vmxnet problem yesterday.  I applied the fix found here:
http://www.vmware.com/community/thread. … eID=518943
I added a note with this link to the Wiki.
