When the power is connected, the laptop's fans start to make a lot of noise. This only happens when the power is connected, immediately after disconnecting the fans are quiet. What do I need to pay attention to?

Well, when the fan makes noise, it tries to cool the parts. So my guess would be that the laptop draining power through the psu somehow makes the parts hot. Either that, or there is an error. That error would most likely not be connected to Arch though, but you could check that easily.
Does the fan start making noise immediately?
What model is it?

If you cannot identify the cause this way, powertop can tell you what draws how much battery - the thing that rises when you plug the AC is the culprit.
