how to minimise reading and writing

Hi,
i've installed arch on a usb pendrive that has 100MB/s reading and 30 MB/s writing speeds. the system is absolutely usable but it lags on startup, application opening, and sometimes during application usage. I suspect that's because of some temporary storage on persistent memory. i've read about "tempfs" in arch wiki but it seems enabled by default in the most useful locations. how can i check the actual state of tempfs usage and maximise it as much as possible? also other suggestions on how to improve the usage of arch on usb it's appreciated.
thanks

that's a lot of stuff, thanks. i'm going to read it and tell if i've managed to get some improvements.
"application" are really any kind, from firefox (which is often the guilty) to simply adding a new line in a vim buffer or opening lxpanel at startup.

For firefox (or other browsers)  you may want to use https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Profile-sync-daemon .

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky
