On boot - error: invalid environment block

Hi,
During the boot I started getting the following error:

invalid environment block
press any key to continue.....

and upon pressing any key the system boots just fine.
when running 'grub-editenv list' the same error occurs

grub-editenv: error: invalid environment block

What might have caused grubenv to get corrupted?
and what are the correct ways to restore it (presumably with the same setting I had)
I couldn't fine any reference to this file in the wiki....

Using:

grub-editenv create

created a new grubenv file.

Doesn't seem to have affected any of the functionality, but not sure what gets affected when changing the parameters in this file
