For context, I am using a thinkpad T480 with an Nvidia MX150 gpu
For a while now, my laptop as been starting to lag out completely after seemingly random intervals. After some debugging, I was able to conclude the issue only occurs when connecting to any external display (for both HDMI and DP on usb-c). When using my laptop as is, with no extra displays connected, everything works fine.
I have been using my laptop like this for about a year now and the issue is relatively new, so its not a load issue. Also, no change in peripherals has been made, and I can confirm the displays/cables are working fine.
I suspect the issue has something to do with the graphics side of things. Because when my laptop is lagging, cpu, ram and disk are all looking fine (even when running on integrated graphics). Also, the mouse seems to be less effected than the other windows. Browsers and electron based apps seem to be the worst, and terminals are still usable (kind of, if you are very patient).
I have already tried the following without effect:
- turn of my compositor (picom)
- disconnect the displays (does not stop the lag when it is already there, only prevents it)
- tried using only integrated graphics
- tried using the dedicated graphics
- tried turning off or on v sync
- tried using the throttled package to prevent thermal throttling (as recommended here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Lenovo … throttling)
All my packages are up to date, and I am running Xorg.
Please do let me know if any relevant logs, or details are required!
Any help, or push in the right direction would be greatly appreciated! ![]()
Edit: I know my post is lacking in log output. This is because one I don't know where to start, and two don't want to clutter my post with irrelevant logs.
Any push in the right direction would be amazing!
Edit: Added some more things I tried and more details on what happens
