getting nvidia 6600GT to work in AGP 8x

Hi,

I've got an nVidia 6600GT which runs in AGP 8x mode, and my motherboard supports it,  but when I type cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status i get the following:

Status: Enabled
Driver: NVIDIA
AGP Rate: 4x
Fast Writes: Disabled
SBA: Disabled

Typing cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/card gives this:

Fast Writes: Supported
SBA: Supported
AGP Rates: 4x 2x 1x
Registers: 0x1f000217:0x1f000104

what's going on? shouldn't I be seeing 8x in there??

here's the device section in my xorg.conf:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Card0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "nVidia Corporation"
    BoardName "NV43 [GeForce 6600/GeForce 6600 GT]"
    Option "NoLogo" "true"
    Option "NvAgp" "1"
    Option "AGPMode" "8x"

any advice appreciated!
