[SOLVED] Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660S: broken VGA console

Recently i upgraded videocard to GeForce GTX 1660S and encountered a problem with VGA console.

With proprietary driver (nvidia 515.57-7):

When display manager (xdm-archlinux) autostart is enabled, after switching to console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) i can login and console seems working until shell prompt goes down below bottom line. Screen should scroll up but nothing happens, no any update on screen, no blinking cursor. If i switch to another VT and back (Alt+F2, Alt+F1) screen becomes updated, prompt is on bottom line and cursor is visible until it goes down again.

When display manager autostart disabled: monitor goes to powersave mode immediately after boot, last visible line is "Loading kernel modules". I can login blindly, i can switch to another VT with Alt+Fx (keyboard LEDs state is kept for each VT), but monitor remains in powersave. If i start XDM service blindly from command line or over ssh, monitor wakes up and works in graphics mode.

I tried to play with modeset parameter for nvidia-drm module - no difference except /sys/class/drm/ content. I set NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations parameter to 1 and 0 for nvidia module - no effect.

I tried older proprietary driver i used before upgrade (nvidia-470xx-dkms from AUR), behaviour is the same except monitor doesn't go to powersave but display remains blank/black.

Also i tried nouveau. When XDM autostart disabled, display is blank after boot (the same as for nvidia-470xx-dkms). When i switch to console from graphics mode (Ctlr+Alt+F1) mouse pointer disappears but picture remains the same, even video mode is not changed (but VTs are alive).

I'm curiuos, are all more or less modern Nvidia cards affected by this bug or this model only? I haven't seen this problem on my old GeForce GT 640 with nvidia-470xx-dkms.
Is it driver/firmware bug or kernel bug? Console on FreeDOS LiveCD works fine.

I wouldn't say i often use VGA console but sometimes it is necessary. I appreciate for any suggestions how to fix it.

My console works fine, but I'm using a rather older GeForce GTX 1050 with nvidia 515.57.

Please post a complete system journal.

Does this also happen when you boot "nomodeset"?
(you won't get a graphical target, but we care about the console behavior anyway)

I narrowed the problem little bit.

With `nvidia_drm modeset=0` console is broken only when X server is running. If i terminate X server console recovers to normal operation.
With `nvidia_drm modeset=1` monitor goes to powersave after module loaded and wakes up after nvidia_drm module unloaded.

`nomodeset` has no any effect, graphical target is reached normally (when enabled by systemd).
I don't use GFX in grub, if it matters. In /etc/default/grub i have:

What happens for "seq 1 250" and what is the output of "tput lines" (maybe run that before wink)?

I added `nomodeset` to kernel command line as you suggested in previous comment. With or without it i don't see any difference in behaviour and in dmesg except this line and two other lines with all parameters reported.

It displays column of numbers, range depends on line where command was run. If i run it right after login (command prompt on line 7) numbers are from 174 to 198. If i run it from bottom line, numbers are from 156 to 180.

Hm, `clear` command works and temporary recovers console (the same as switching to another VT and back). Ctrl+L and `reset` partially work if command prompt "went below bottom line" not so far.

Have you tried the framebuffer console and or enforcing an enabled output (the names match what "xrandr -q" reports) and resolution?
Also check the behavior of (to see whether the previous output segment is just caused by the console optimizing away prints)

I tried framebuffer console by setting GRUB_GFXMODE="1920x1080x32" (also other resolutions and depths) and GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX="keep" to grub. Mode is set but scrolling is very slow, very uncomfortable to use it.

I also tried `video=HDMI-0:1920x1080M@60e` in kernel parameters ("HDMI-0" is reported by xrandr), also "card0-HDMI-A-1" instead of "HDMI-0" (as present in /sys/class/drm/) and "HDMI-A-1". No any effect.

Image freezes as soon as output reaches bottom line, when existing image should be scrolled one line up but it doesn't.

feared as much since also the $LINES were accurate (so the output has just been optimized away)

The more relevant question is whether the output now works as expected (just slow)

Does passing "vga=792" or using "GRUB_GFXMODE="1024x768x24" yield better results?

Yes, it works as expected. Cursor doesn't fly out of visible area and picture doesn't stuck.

Quite faster, 2.2 s for 257 lines, but still annoying.
I remember 20 years ago i tried VESA framebuffer console on 266 MHz CPU and was wondered why it is so slow. Performance remained the same since then smile

I would like to know if wierd console behaviour when X server is running and monitor powersave when no X server running are effects of the same bug or they are caused by different bugs. I suspected the kernel can't detect output where monitor is connected to, but /sys/class/drm/card0-*/status represent correct configuration. Also i don't fully understand VGA Arbiter role. I have no other GPUs in the system, my CPU doesn't have integrated one, so it shouldn't be involved.

There's some problem w/ nvidia and the 5.18.14 kernel, reports are all over the place and so are the symptoms.

Edit: oh, and the framebuffer console has always been dog-slow w/ nvidia, feel free to try "GRUB_GFXMODE="640x480x24" but don't expect too much from that either.

Yeah, symptoms look similar but not exactly equal. I tried with downgraded kernel to 5.18.12 and older driver.
I just tried nvidia-open. Monitor goes to powersave after switching to VT even with modeset=0 when X server is running. At least sources are available and i can try to poke around there.

Try to move the nvidia modules into the initramfs, but that's just a hunch - ideally try a kernel w/ that patch reverted.

I build kernel with reverted 07186778cf645cc79e6913a28dadf445cd3e2439 and installed nvidia-dkms-515.57-1 ( i have pkgbase changed), put nvidia-modules to initrd (i already tried it with unpatched kernel) but it didn't help.
Patches are related to framebuffer device, i doubt they affect text mode VT console but who knows.

I observe issues even with 5.17.9-arch1-1. I can't get how bisecting 5.18.* can help in my case.

Solved by switching to UEFI boot. I got framebuffer console and its scrolling is pretty fast.
My previous attempts to use UEFI have been failed due to bug in firmware. It didn't recognize EFI system partition until i moved EFI/arch/grubx64.efi to EFI/boot/bootx64.efi.
