[SOLVED] High pitch noise in headphones

I can hear high pitch noise after some time in headphones.
Headphones connected into jack input by cable.
Even recorded it by iPhone and extracted and amplified with Audacity, you can hear 2 seconds sample here (Warning! LOUD):
https://www.dropbox.com/s/sjc6rz3xgcf1v … e.ogg?dl=0

It disappears right after connecting/disconnecting laptop to power adapter, but returns after some time (5-10 secs).
It disappears if I press mute for headphones output, and returns when I unmute.
It disappears after pulseaudio -k, but returns after 3 seconds of playing youtube video in Firefox.

Re: [SOLVED] High pitch noise in headphones

No noise problems in Ubuntu, any way to debug?

disable power saving in snd_hda_intel /etc/modprobe.d/disableHDAPM.conf

options snd-hda-intel power_save=0

Re: [SOLVED] High pitch noise in headphones

V1del, thank you, I have added "options snd-hda-intel power_save=0" to file /etc/modprobe.d/disableHDAPM.conf.
Check status after reboot with cat /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save, got "0".
Still hear high pitched noise, on Ubuntu I hear only clicks sometimes.

Re: [SOLVED] High pitch noise in headphones

That sounds like a capacitor, might be utterly sound-unrelated.
Do you get the same when only booting the multi-user.target (2nd link below)?
Do you use noveau or the nvidia driver (lspci -k)?

Re: [SOLVED] High pitch noise in headphones

seth,
1. no noise without GUI (systemctl set-default multi-user.target) (sic!).
But, when I write startx and GUI starting to load, I can hear noise again. And if I switch to console (ctrl + alt + F2) after that, then noise disappears immediately.
So, GUI = noise.

2. I am using nvidia driver
lspci -k

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GA104M [GeForce RTX 3080 Mobile / Max-Q 8GB/16GB] (rev a1)
        Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] GA104M [GeForce RTX 3080 Mobile / Max-Q 8GB/16GB]
        Kernel driver in use: nvidia
        Kernel modules: nouveau, nvidia_drm, nvidia

Since it's an optiomus system, please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General and also

loginctl session-status # from the X11 session

Re: [SOLVED] High pitch noise in headphones

Please use [code][/code] tags, not "quote" tags. Edit your post in this regard.
Also that's not your xorg log, actually check the link I posted - you'll find it in ~/.local/share/xorg

Edit: and right off the bat, suspend the compositor (SHIFT+Alt+F12)
Edit 2: also xf86-video-intel-backlight-helper likely means you're using xf86-video-intel and end up rendering on software because you're not using mesa-amber (and don't want to!)
=> remove xf86-video-intel

Re: [SOLVED] High pitch noise in headphones

seth,
1. quotes -> code done
2. thank you, found it in .local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log, sorry for causing confusion
https://pastebin.com/nV1v9SMC
3. sorry didn't understand about compositor; but tried to press (SHIFT+Alt+F12), nothing seems to change, noise still persists.
4. I see that xf86-video-intel is not installed

sudo pacman -R xf86-video-intel
error: target not found: xf86-video-intel

Re: [SOLVED] High pitch noise in headphones

Your xorg log disagrees

[ 9740.370] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so

[ 9740.371] (II) intel: Driver for Intel(R) Integrated Graphics Chipsets:

pacman -Qo /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so

You proabaly also want to skip "nvidia-drm.fbdev=1" for the moment (though that wasn't a thing when you started the thread and you're not running the server on the nvidia chip either - it's just reported to be buggy)

nothing seems to change

On KDE it'd at least toggle the compositor (shadows, transparency etc.)

Re: [SOLVED] High pitch noise in headphones

seth,
1. it was xf86-video-intel-git, thank you for pointing me command "pacman -Qo /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so"
2. removed by "sudo pacman -R xf86-video-intel-git", *don't hear noise* after reboot.
3. will check nvidia-drm.fbdev=1 later
seems fixed, not even clicking sounds as in Ubuntu

Re: [SOLVED] High pitch noise in headphones

Addendum: you'll have to switch to acpilight for brightness control and you'll likely still get the whistle when you stress the CPU otherwise - this is a physical problem and on a notebook it's going to be hard to find and dampen the capacitor that causes this sad

Re: [SOLVED] High pitch noise in headphones

@seth I think it's related to the fact that there is old soviet electrical wiring that cause a lot of noise even on my macbook and pc microphone jack. But I found it's interesting that there was no noise in Win and later in Ubuntu, and I don't hear it after removing x86-video-intel-git, maybe it's common problem and nvidia binary driver do something about it, I wish I knew.

Re: [SOLVED] High pitch noise in headphones

I'm pretty sure that the device is sufficiently shielded even against soviet tech tongue
This should annoy your CPU a bit and will possibly cause the capacitor to whistle through your headphones:

for ((i=0;i<8;++i)); do echo "scale=5000; a(1)*4" | bc -l &; done

Re: [SOLVED] High pitch noise in headphones

@seth, I have found that noise only appears on cold start, I mean really cold, after I shutdown laptop for 10 minutes. I suppose that Windows and Ubuntu makes machine to run hard on boot (and to heat), and Arch is not, that's why it's reproducible in my case. After 20 min on Arch no noise at all, hardware problem -> Solved.
