[solved]newbie network issue after switching to NetworkManger

I was playing with my wifi, trying to make a kvm bridge. when I realized I could not do this, I made one last change and that was to switch from using netctl to NetworkManager.

with netctl@interface.service, I had configured a static address of 192.168.4.90

when I booted with NM running, two things happened. first my interface name went from the long form (wlp0***) to wlan0.

second, ip route shows the address as being 192.168.4.0. however, my Emby server is still connected to it at the 192.168.4.90 address. (my gateway is 192.168.4.1 so I don't understand how 192.168.4.0 makes sense).

can someone help me sort this out. I have a few virtual interfaces connected too which were made when setting up virt-manager, if that information is relevant.

thanks.
edit: after a second reboot, the 192.168.4.90 address shows correctly with iproute2.
