Unused S/PDIF audio profile keeps hijacking ouput

I have two audio devices, my monitor and my headphone jack. The headphone jack has numerous audio profiles associated with it, but the two that are of most interest here are 'Duplex' and 'S/PDIF'.

My goal is to have audio output switch automatically from the Headphones to the monitor as I plug and unplug the headphones. Currently, here is what occurs when undergoing this process:
1. Audio is playing through monitor
2. Plug in headphones, audio switches to headphones via the Duplex profile.
3. Unplug headphones
4. For a brief second, audio plays through monitor
5. Audio output is changed back to the headphone jack device, but for the S/PDIF profile.

Long story short, the S/PDIF profile keeps overwriting all other audio outputs and forcing itself - making seamless switching impossible. I have used alsamixer to disable S/PDIF by muting it, and have set auto-mute on. Neither of these change the resulting behavior. Instead, when I unplug headphones the S/PDIF profile is unmuted and it is like I never attempted to mute the profile.

How can I permanently disable the S/PDIF profile so that it stops overwriting all other audio output?
