Gnome blank after GDM login

I'm using GNOME over X11 with the legacy nvidia-470xx driver. Everything worked fine until recently when I suddenly get a "gray" blank screen after logging in.

GDM login screen itself works so I know X/graphics themselves are ok. But as soon as I login it just blanks out. The session didn't change, it's still gnome over X and I'm using `WaylandEnable=false` in /etc/gdm/custom.conf

The nvidia modules are preloaded in mkinitcpio, there are no dmesg errors, or Xorg errors.

AFAICS the gdm login is successful, there are no errors in gdm journal either.

Switching to using nouveau driver works but only in wayland mode. GNOME via X11/gdm (after commenting WaylandEnable=false in gdm config) also ends up with the same gray blank screen.

Oddly enough, using startx directly with X11/gnome works (with nouveau, I didn't try that with nvidia yet). I'm really confused what the issue is.

What other logs can I look at to debug this further?
