Thinkpad X1 Carbon - Fan speed sensor is stuck

Hello! So it would appear somehow that the speed sensor on the fan is stuck, and I'm really hoping this isn't a hardware issue as I don't want to have to pry open the thing but it persists across reboots so that's kind of what I'm assuming.

Basically, I'm stuck in a position where regardless of whether the fans are on or off, /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon6/fan1_input always 9868, and thus any non-zero value in /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon6/pwm1 will always spin up to that speed. Is there a way to perhaps cycle or reset that sensor somehow such that I don't have to take the laptop apart or is this simply a hardware issue?

Thanks!

EDIT: Okay, so I caught it when it started doing so and it looks like the fan controller is actually spinning them up to 65536 which is about when they start to tear themselves apart and shut off. Now this is happening no matter what and the laptop is rendered basically unusable without inevitable overheating.
