Alsamixer - Internal Mic Boost

When I set the internal microphone to 100% (0 dB) in pavucontrol or zoom, then the internal mic boost gain automatically increases and distorts the recordings. Naively, I would have thought that the microphone volume and the microphone gain are decoupled. Is this normal?
