open-vm-tools not suspending and autosizing properly

The Problem

I have a fresh install of Arch running as a guest in VMware Workstation 16 Pro on a Windows 10 host.

After installing open-vm-tools (following the wiki) and starting vmtools.service, my machine immediately gets the following issues:

  • Suspending within Arch freezes it completely.

  • Suspending through Vmware generates error messages (see below).

  • Screen autosizing stops working after each reboot.

Stopping vmtools.service gets rid of both of the suspend issues, so clearly that's the culprit. Why? I have installed Arch in VMware Workstation Pro before, but without these issues.

These old bug reports (here and here) suggest it's an issue with the open-vm-tools package. Is this the case? What do I do to fix it?

I am currently running without a desktop environment or any GUI. A previous install with GNOME had the same issue.

More Details

Suspending within Arch
When I suspend Arch, either via the command line with 'systemctl suspend', or via GNOME's power button icon, the system would go black and be completely unresponsive. Shutting down and restarting the guest via VMware is the only way to get it working again.

Suspending through Vmware
This generates the following error message box:

The request to Suspend this virtual machine failed because the corresponding VMware Tools script did not run successfully. If you have configured a custom suspend script in this virtual machine, make sure that it contains no errors. Attempting the operation again will ignore the script failure. You can also submit a support request to report this issue.

Followed immediately by a second error message box:

Failed to suspend the virtual machine.

Attempting to suspend a second time actually does work.

When I Start Up the guest again via VMWare, I get the following error message box:

The VMware Tools resume script did not run successfully in this virtual machine. If you have configured a custom resume script in this virtual machine, make sure that it contains no errors. You can also submit a support request to report this issue.

The virtual machine does start up normally.

I'm noticing a lot of replies to posts made right before and right after my post. If I've written my post poorly, or I can do something to improve it, I'd appreciate the feedback.
