Hi
I have an HP ProBook 4530s laptop with two graphics cards.
I want to enable Radeon HD6490M as my primary card and always use it.
xrandr --listproviders command just shows intel one so I can't go further with Prime wiki!
It's a fresh install of arch, kde and sddm.
I read about graphic cards and prime in wiki and search forum, but I have no idea what's wrong!
Please help.

Does the BIOS provide an option to disable the IGP?

Hi seth
Thanks! You saved me days! It's now detect by xrandr!
Check dmesg/the system journal.
Possibly https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PRIME# … pplication
Yes, that's true! Solved by adding radeon.runpm=0 to the kernel parameters in the bootloader.
Before the fix, there were many repeated red lines in dmesg:
kernel: debugfs: File 'radeon_ring_gfx' in directory '1' already present!
kernel: debugfs: File 'radeon_ring_dma1' in directory '1' already present!
kernel: debugfs: File 'radeon_ring_uvd' in directory '1' already present!I can't see them now!
Does the BIOS provide an option to disable the IGP?
(Cause that will spare you the framebuffer copy)
No, Just a Switchable Graphics checkbox, if I disable this then my discrete card won't detect by arch at all.
I want to enable Radeon HD6490M as my primary card and always use it.
Is it ok to go with https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PRIME#User_scenarios ?
Can I just turn off Intel graphic in arch?

You'll obviously have to adapt that for your drivers and PCI IDs - you should also check --listproviders again to see whether you can actually redirect the output (but I assume so)
Can I just turn off Intel graphic in arch?
No. You'll need it as crtc to access the outputs attached to it (that's why I asked for the BIOS option)
You may alternatively try whether the IGP is good enough™ for everyday use and only kick in the GPU w/ "DRI_PRIME=1" for heavy(ier) duty stuff.

I've installed some standard KDE apps while thinking about what should I do with dual graphics based on your suggestion (DRI_PRIME) and suddenly xrandr can't detect the Radeon card again.
I didn't change a single setting either by GUI or config files.
List of installed apps:
ark kcalc kdegraphics-thumbnailers kdesdk-thumbnailers kdegraphics-thumbnailers okular spectacle kwrite kompare gwenview ffmpegthumbs plasma-systemmonitor kamoso sddm-kcm kwallet-pam kscreen kwalletmanager kinfocenter khotkeys kde-gtk-config breeze-gtk bluedevilI removed kscreen and bluedevil (if they are relative to the problem!) but nothing changed.

I've tested "kquitapp5 plasmashell || killall plasmashell && kstart5 plasmashell" in this case, no it doesn't work. But the GPU shows up when logout and login again!
So I added radeon to MODULES=(radeon) in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and then run: sudo mkinitcpio -p linux (I'm not sure if I have to run mkinitcpio -P ?)
now the GPU shows up 2 out of 10 times reboot!
I guess I need to logout and in every time.

no it doesn't work
No, that won't work. You'll have to restart the X11 server…

Yes. Sure the MODULES were empty before? Having i915 in there would probably also be nice.
Please post your /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and an updated system journal.

Yeah, no. We'll find another way ![]()

# The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
# run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
# in this array. For instance:
# MODULES=(piix ide_disk reiserfs)
MODULES=(i915 radeon)
# BINARIES
# This setting includes any additional binaries a given user may
# wish into the CPIO image. This is run last, so it may be used to
# override the actual binaries included by a given hook
# BINARIES are dependency parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries

# FILES
# This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added

# This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
# modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
# Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the
# order in which HOOKS are added. Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook name>' for
# help on a given hook.
# 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.
# 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules
# 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES
# Examples:
## This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.
## No raid, lvm2, or encrypted root is needed.
# HOOKS=(base)
#
## This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should
## work as a sane default
# HOOKS=(base udev autodetect block filesystems)
#
## This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
## No autodetection is done.
# HOOKS=(base udev block filesystems)
#
## This setup assembles a pata mdadm array with an encrypted root FS.
## Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H mdadm' for more information on raid devices.
# HOOKS=(base udev block mdadm encrypt filesystems)
#
## This setup loads an lvm2 volume group on a usb device.
# HOOKS=(base udev block lvm2 filesystems)

Ok, first let's just try to get amdgpu out of the way, I've not idea what or why loads it, but
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel … acklisting - since it's probably loaded explicitly, you'll have to go w/ the "/bin/true" variant.
Though maybe it shows up in https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_module#systemd ?

ls /etc/modules-load.d : empty.

I make a file like this: /etc/modprobe.d/noamdgpu.conf and put this in it: install amdgpu /bin/true.
As modconf has already been in HOOKS array (inside /etc/mkinitcpio.conf) so It's not needed to put /etc/modprobe.d/noamdgpu.conf inside FILES array.
Then run:
mkinitcpio -PAnd now the Radeon GPU shows up on my famous 10 reboot test every time! ![]()
