[SOLVED] Xorg lags on XPS 9320

Hello, I am installing on a brand new Dell XPS 9320 and I am having trouble pin-pointing where the following problem is coming from. The issue is that Xorg is not responsive. It locks up for milliseconds, continuously, switching terminals, typing, opening new applications, etc. The best way to describe the issue is that when X is running, open a terminal, keep a key, say 'f' pressed. Then it starts printing 'ffffff' then locks for a few milliseconds, and then suddenly a chunk of 'ffffffffffffffffff'  appear. And so on.

`.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log` does not show anything interesting

It's not CPU as `top` and `htop` do not show anything. It's not RAM as it has 32Gb mostly free. It's not I/O with disks as iotop shows nothing and it's got a fast nvme. I cannot reproduce this when X is not running, so this leads me to suspect on the video card, which is an Iris Xe.
The driver i915 loads fine, it has direct rendering supported (`glxinfo | grep "direct rendering"`).

The only topic here I found on this card is https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=275302 but didn't help.

I can see GuC and Huc loading well at boot.

I'd appreciate any pointers on how to deal with this.

Update: installing xf86-video-intel made things considerably worse

Re: [SOLVED] Xorg lags on XPS 9320

Please post your xorg log after this happened (and don't use xf86-video-intel)
Also elaborate a bit on your environment (desktop, compositor, windowmanager, …)

Re: [SOLVED] Xorg lags on XPS 9320

There is nothing really relevant in xorg log as far as I can see, posting it entirely below. I am not using xf86-video-intel. This is a bare fresh system. Running i3-wm + Xorg as a normal user with startx, no compositor. No custom mods on xorg.conf.d except for the keyboard layout and the trackpad tapping (both working well on libinput). Let me know if I can provide more info. Below there is also all the warnings at boot.

Re: [SOLVED] Xorg lags on XPS 9320

I should also add that this is not an issue rendering 2D nor 3D, watching videos on youtube works flawlessly. It is only reacting to the operator (keyboard/trackpad etc) that hangs. So perhaps it could be USB or pci related?

Re: [SOLVED] Xorg lags on XPS 9320

Please don't copy and paste out of the pager, you can use the tip in teh 1st link below to upload files to a pastebin service.

There's no input lag recorded (what would happen if a keyboard event with a dated timestamp gets processed) and the events you describe are synthetic (autorepeat) so I don't think this is input related.
As for the output, disable FBC and PSR, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … nable_fbc) and https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … flickering

What desktop environment is this? Is there a compositor involved?
Do you get the same behavior w/ "startx xterm"?

Ah thanks, hadn't noticed this

As in that message: no compositor, no desktop environment, this is plain i3-wm +  Xorg. It happens with simply startx xterm as well.

Will try the other tips. I just want to mention that the hangs of the form

[drm] GPU HANG: ecode 12:0:00000000

Are rendering the system unusable now that I am actually trying to work on it instead of just installing things on the terminal. Any activity on the browser causes a hang

Re: [SOLVED] Xorg lags on XPS 9320

Ideally post a complete system journal so that we can get the hangs in context.
Also test the LTS kernel to see whether this is a regression in more recent kernels.

The Wilki page for this laptop says that there are problems with the LTS kernel (although it's slightly older than the current one) https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Dell_X … lus_(9320)

You're having problems right now, so I'd test the behavior rather than relying on a pretty unspecific statement in the wiki.

LTS kernel behaved the same way in what respect to my problem and it was worse in that it has the glitches that the wiki mentions.

In order to report the issue upstream I built the latest drm-tip and with that kernel it still lags but I couldn't reproduce the GPU Hangs logs yet. When I do I'll post here the journal.

And here is the full log of the first hang, after that there were plenty in a short period https://pastebin.com/HKKriHUX

And the report upstream https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/-/issues/6916

Re: [SOLVED] Xorg lags on XPS 9320

The boot starts at 18:41:43, 18:41:46 we get the first signs of the GUC being loaded, 18:47:17 the system goes to sleep, wakes up at 21:17:59 and the journal ends at 21:43:10  w/ the GPU hang/reset

Sep 22 21:43:10 forkchoice kernel: i915 0000:00:02.0: [drm] Resetting chip for stopped heartbeat on rcs0

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1958433

Together w/ the initial 3s delay and the fact that even NM runs before we even start looking at the GPU, I don't think that's necessarily where the problem is.
Get rid of all external devices and try to disable what you can in the BIOS (fingerprint, bluetooth, wifi, …) and see whether you can reproduce the issue.

Also please post "lspci -tv" to show the pci arrangement and what's near the GPU.

lspci seems unsuspicious (no further devices on the branch)
Did you try the behavior w/ a stripped down hardware?

Same issue, didn't try disabling USB because that would be a little difficult in my setup, and I do think XHCI could play a role, but booting without usb would take me a while and would rather wait to see if the guys upstream don't see something obvious in the debug logs

Interesting! disabling PSR on the drm-tip kernel (built locally) does work, I haven't run enough to rule out the hangs, but the lags are no longer there when typing. So I'll mark this thread as solved, thanks for the dedication
