[SOLVED] Xorg+nvidia overloads CPU, shows black screen after update

Hi
It could be a newbie question, but I thought I'd better post it here.
Basic info: xorg-server 21.1.4-1, nvidia-lts 1:515.76-4, Linux 5.15.72-1-lts, proc/cmdline ...quiet rcutree.rcu_idle_gp_delay=1, NVIDIA Corporation GA106 [Geforce RTX 3050] (rev a1), Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10700

After a recent upgrade (but after a long delay, since July this year) SDDM with Plasma doesn't show up anymore, I only see black screen. Keyboard doesn't seem to have any effect (even *lock leds do not light up). Though it is possible to ssh to the machine.
I switched the default runlevel to 3, so I can use the machine locally, but once I run startx everything gets back to the situation described above.
I walked though Xorg and NVidia troubleshoot pages, recombined grub.conf and intird many times, but there's no effect. There aren't also any noticeable errors in journalctl. The only thing important is some surprise from the nvidia-driver:

kernel: nvidia-modeset: WARNING: GPU:0: Lost display notification (0:0x00000000); continuing
kernel: NVRM: Xid (PCI:0000:01:00): 62, pid='<unknown>', name=<unknown>, 0000(0000) 00000000 00000000
kernel: nvidia-modeset: ERROR: GPU:0: Error while waiting for GPU progress: 0x0000c67e:0 3:0:216:208 (many-many times!)

All the dependant services (kde* etc.), obviously refuse to run or fail with timeouts. Xorg.log doesn't have any (EE) lines.
After starting Xorg (either through startx or through runlevel change) Xorg takes 100% of CPU, the machine gets slower. I tried to kill the Xorg process, but it doesn't help. In fact even if I call for reboot, Xorg still hangs and doesn't let the system to finish all processes, I have to reboot with the reset button.
I was thinking about downgrading the Xorg version, but the latest version is said to be published in July, so if it was a bug of this version - it would have been reported already, but I do not see any reports like this.
I tried to reinstall nvidia-lts, xorg-server and xorg-drivers - no result (though I didn't purge previous installs).
I tried nvidia-xconfig, no result, deleting xorg.conf - no result.

Meanwhile the same machine was able to run games on windows, so the video card and the rest hardware work OK. Kubuntu LiveUSB starts OK in graphic mode (though unable to detect display resolution, but that is maybe because nouvaeu is unable to detect an RTX card yet). Heck 3 days ago (before the update) everything was FINE!

Any ideas on restoring the system are highly welcome. I can provide the nvidia-debug.log, but unsure if it helps.

Re: [SOLVED] Xorg+nvidia overloads CPU, shows black screen after update

Thank you. Resolved by downgrading to linux-lts-5.15.71-1, nvidia-dkms-515.65.01, nvidia-utils-515.65.01
Nvidia bug to track on is https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/5 … /229132/15
