[SOLVED] kernel i915 drm ERROR failed to set rcs0 head to zero ctl

Hello Arch community,
i got the error "kernel: i915 [drm] ERROR failed to set rcs0 head to zero ctl". This causes problems with my integrated GPU (iGPU) and I cannot solve it. I have tried a lot of stuff: different kernel options, different kernels (lts, hardened, zen) , older kernels (5.18 and 5.19) (also the new Linux 6.0.1-arch1-1 x86_64), different DRI Versions and Acceleration Methods for the iGPU. I would be grateful for any tip.

I writing in this forum for the first time, so I'm sorry, if I used some tags wrong or something.

$ journalctl
Oct 13 23:34:32 tpw541 kernel: i915 0000:00:02.0: [drm] *ERROR* failed to set rcs0 head to zero ctl 00000000 head 00001d08 tail 00000000 start 0012d000

Short description of the problem:
Since 29th September I noticed different Problems: I can not play any videos (whatever player: mpv, vlc, mplayer, dragon) (tried filetypes: .mkv, .avi, .mp4). Sounds is playing fine. Chromium, Chrome, Opera, Code - OSS, Discord, main dialog of Nextcloud-client, Screen recording with SimpleScreenRecorder, all applications are not usable, because the graphic cannot be shown properly. When Xorg start Mate I see a few graphic freezes for a few seconds. I also tried to use plasma-desktop. But it does not show the windows properly, freezes and is not usable.

My Setup:
Lenovo Thinkpad W541
linux-5.19.13.arch1-1-x86_64 (upgraded to 6.0.1-arch1-1)
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4810MQ CPU @ 2.80GHz
Mesa Intel® HD Graphics 4600 (HSW GT2)
NVIDIA GK107GLM [Quadro K1100M]
Mate 1.26.0 with lightdm 1:1.32.0-4 running with xorg-server 21.1.4-1
and xf86-video-intel-1:2.99.917+916+g31486f40-2

$ glxinfo | grep -i rendering
direct rendering: Yes
$ glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
348 frames in 5.0 seconds = 69.478 FPS
300 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.998 FPS
300 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.999 FPS
300 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.999 FPS
301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.008 FPS

FPS rates match the monitor fresh rate of 60 Hz.
I also installed "libva-intel-driver 2.4.1-2" for hardware video acceleration. Also tried without it.
Also tried with disabled "software compositing window manager" in the window preferences of the windows manager of mate.

Now the long story:

VLC does not show any error.

is talking about that startx does not work. But my Mate-Desktop is starting fine with just a few freezes for about 1-2 second each.

Installed more mesa driver for video acceleration, but no luck to resolve my problem:
mesa-vdpau 22.1.7-1 and libva-mesa-driver 22.1.7-1

Look into the hint from Xorg log, no luck either:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/intel_ … RI3_issues
Tried to switch back to DRI2 with Xorg config and three different acceleration methods "sna", "uxa", "blt".

$ nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
Section "Device"
	Identifier	"Intel Graphics"
	Driver			"intel"
	Option "DRI" "2" # try the old DRI2, but DRI3 is now default
	Option         "AccelMethod"   "sna"    # default
	#Option         "AccelMethod"   "uxa"   # fallback
	#Option "AccelMethod"	"blt"	# disable render acceleration
EndSection

But no luck with DRI2 and the different AccelMethods. I can play videos and other applications, but they do not run smooth and the graphic generation got a lot of lags.
And the worst is that the applications got random crashes and produce core dumps in journalctl

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/intel_ … RI3_issues
set the environment variable LIBGL_DRI3_DISABLE=1.
--> variable disappear after reboot and does not solve the problem

I am really lost and would be grateful for any hint. Thank you in advance.

Re: [SOLVED] kernel i915 drm ERROR failed to set rcs0 head to zero ctl

Afaik haswell is barely at the cutoff point, install mesa-amber for the old OGL driver to work

Re: [SOLVED] kernel i915 drm ERROR failed to set rcs0 head to zero ctl

Have you tried without xf86-video-intel  installed? What if you just install mesa-amber and get rid of everything else? I.e. remove mesa-vdpau, libva-mesa-driver, mesa etc. as well.
Post a complete Xorg log.

Re: [SOLVED] kernel i915 drm ERROR failed to set rcs0 head to zero ctl

Hello,
thank you for your suggestions. These are the next steps I tried, but had no luck.

remove mesa-vdpau, libva-mesa-driver and replace mesa with mesa-amber
--> problem not solved

remove xf86-video-nouveau, xf86-video-ati, xf86-video-amdgpu, xf86-video-intel (previous installed through xorg-drivers and try remove xf86-video-vmware later)

Now Xorg does not start mate. The log says something like "module intel not found".
--> install xf86-video-intel again

Re: [SOLVED] kernel i915 drm ERROR failed to set rcs0 head to zero ctl

If you remove xf86-video-intel, you also need to remove the configuration file which tells Xorg it has to use that driver. The general advice is to install only the drivers you need and to start without configuring Xorg. Installing xorg-drivers is definitely not recommended because it means you've installed a whole bunch of video drivers, which can cause problems.

My thought was that if you don't have xf86-video-intel installed (and don't tell Xorg it has to use it), Xorg should hopefully fall back to the builtin modesetting driver. This is known to work better than xf86-video-intel in some cases. (See the wiki page on Intel graphics for details.) Alternatively, you can change the driver to "modesetting", but I'd only try using config files for Xorg if you have problems without.

Re: [SOLVED] kernel i915 drm ERROR failed to set rcs0 head to zero ctl

I know, that I had to remove the Xorg config file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf and it was deleted. But xorg does not want to start without the package xf86-video-intel and the problem still remain.

Here are the next steps I tried:
removed all packages (except xf86-video-intel, xf86-input-synaptics, xf86-input-libinput (libinput is required by xorg-server)) from xorg-drivers: xf86-input-evdev, xf86-input-libinput, xf86-video-dummy, xf86-video-fbdev, xf86-video-openchrome, xf86-video-qxl, xf86-video-vesa, xf86-video-voodoo, xf86-input-void, xf86-input-vmmouse, xf86-video-vmware,
--> problem not solved

$ less /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE
[ 4.924] (EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)
[ 4.924] (EE) Failed to load module "vesa" (module does not exist, 0)

[ 43.547] (EE) intel(0): When reporting this, please include /sys/class/drm/card0/error and the full dmesg.

now remove xf86-video-intel again (/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf is removed also)
--> Xorg tries to start Mate, crashed and goes back to the login screen of lightdm

Xorg.0.log is extended by the line "Failed to load module "intel""
$ less /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE
[ 4.924] (EE) Failed to load module "intel" (module does not exist, 0)
[ 4.924] (EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)

need to install xf86-video-intel, xf86-video-fbdev and xf86-video-vesa

---
now switch back to package mesa (instead of mesa-amber) and try to run only the dedicated GPU (https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA … phics_only)
install nvidia and xorg-xrandr

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf

Section "OutputClass"
    Identifier "intel"
    MatchDriver "i915"
    Driver "modesetting"
EndSection

Section "OutputClass"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    MatchDriver "nvidia-drm"
    Driver "nvidia"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration"
    Option "PrimaryGPU" "yes"
    ModulePath "/usr/lib/nvidia/xorg"
    ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
EndSection

If you are using a display manager then you will need to create or edit a display setup script for your display manager instead of using ~/.xinitrc.
LightDM

For the LightDM display manager:

/etc/lightdm/display_setup.sh

#!/bin/sh
xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
xrandr --auto

make the script executable

sudo chmod +x /etc/lightdm/display_setup.sh

Now configure lightdm to run the script by editing the [Seat:*] section in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf:

/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

[Seat:*]
display-setup-script=/etc/lightdm/display_setup.sh

--> mate crashed with and without the package xf86-video-intel
--> try with mesa-amber --> xorg does not want to start with out the module "intel", even if there is no config-file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

so remove all changes with /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf and lightdm and just keep mesa-amber and xf86-video-intel --> but the problem still remain

maybe I need to leave Arch and install Ubuntu sad because I need this Laptop now for my studies

Thank you for your help

Re: [SOLVED] kernel i915 drm ERROR failed to set rcs0 head to zero ctl

The "failed to load module" error messages in Xorg's log don't mean you need those modules. Those are normal. You figure out which drivers to install by looking at your hardware and reading the wiki.

Xorg doesn't find any fonts installed. Xorg shows the font path gets set to nothing. That is definitely going to cause problems. It might not be the sole cause, but you'll definitely need to fix it. Do you have any fonts installed?

It's possible the intel driver is what you need. The wiki says 4th generation and later it's probably better not to install it, but since yours is pretty near that cutoff, maybe it will work better than falling back to the modesetting driver, which is recommended for newer intel chips.

Hopefully somebody else will chime in about nvidia. I haven't used their graphics for years and I've never had dual graphics.

You almost certainly want things like the libinput drivers. It's just having video drivers you don't need installed can cause problems.

Re: [SOLVED] kernel i915 drm ERROR failed to set rcs0 head to zero ctl

I have installed some fonts, but the kernel problems still remain.

My last check ups:

remove all remained packages with "xf86-video-*" and "xf86-input-*":
--> xf86-input-synaptics --> now deleted
--> xf86-input-libinput required by xorg-server
--> remove mesa-vdpau, libva-mesa-driver, libva-intel-driver, mesa --> all not found
--> problem not solved

check installation of mesa-amber --> ok

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/intel_ … ver_(i965)
MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=i965
--> env just disappear after reboot --> problem not solved

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Hardwa … celeration
install libva-intel-driver

$ journalctl

Re: [SOLVED] kernel i915 drm ERROR failed to set rcs0 head to zero ctl

Does Xorg find the fonts?
You should see the path being set in the log.

Can you boot to  multi-user.target successfully?

Re: [SOLVED] kernel i915 drm ERROR failed to set rcs0 head to zero ctl

Stop flailing around and
1. boot the LTS kernel
2. post a complete system journal and xorg log (not random excerpts) and
3. do not mess around w/ the system afterwards.

Your wild random changes generate a moving target that is much harder to hit.
We will freeze the condition on the LTS kernel to rule out kernel regressions (esp. w/ 6.x, but your issues would have started w/ 5.19.12.arch1-1 and it's not clear whether they were caused by an update at all) isolate the problem there, hopefully create a working baseline and move on from there.

Also try to boot some live distro since from the initial descritption I'm not sure that this isn't a HW issue…

Ftr. Sep 29th would possibly have seen a linux-firmware update on Sep 24, 2022

Re: [SOLVED] kernel i915 drm ERROR failed to set rcs0 head to zero ctl

Hello,
two days ago I got the opportunity to test my OS configuration an another W541 and a T520. And there are not any issues. So the problem is definitely the integrated Intel GPU. For those you can not test their OS config on another Hardware. If you try a live USB with Ubuntu or Linux Mint (Cinnamon, Mate or Xfce), there are graphical issues and Ubuntu only run properly in the graphic safe mode.
Thank you all for all the hints.

Sorry, forgot to say explicitly that changing the CPU solved the problem. So the assumption was correct.
