System kind of falls asleep.

I have an IMB Netvista P4 that after a while kind of stop answering.  Situation appears:
whether I run X or not,
whether computer is "sitting" doing nothing (0 load) or 100% (Folding@home)

Symptoms:
cursor stops blinking
top stops find of freeze
ls works
backspace(on an empty line) start annoying continuous bell as opposed to a single bip.

Any clue anyone ?

Re: System kind of falls asleep.

sounds like hardware failure, imminent, ( as suggestive of all prolonged beeps of the pcspeaker ) ..

Re: System kind of falls asleep.

Huummm  It has been behaving like so for quite some time (couple months).  Not sure what it is I should check.  Yesterday, it froze again.  I rebooted and it froze again after only 20 min.  Another reboot and now it has been of for over 26 hours.  I am puzzled.

Re: System kind of falls asleep.

unfortunately i suck at this, and no-one else has replied yet ...
all i can point u towards is the log files.. /var/log

errors.log , at least on my system is the one that shows hw issues ...
it's quite an interesting scan for me lol ..
check this fi.e [>Nov 14 01:19:10 athlin ERROR: (device hda9): stack overrun in dtSearch!<] ; dunno what it means, but i don't really care lol .. it's a fat32 part. which i formatted a long time ago, i think it had to do with that time windows crashed during partition shifting, and somehow managed to lock several partitions together x( lol
