Primary Volume Does Nothing

When I adjust the primary volume level it has no effect on the volume of output.  I'm using Gnome and can drill into the specific volumes of different sources, these volume levels work as expected.  Unfortunately the primary volume control has no effect on volume levels (except when going to 0/mute, which will mute all audio output).

Setup:

  • linux-zen

  • gnome

  • pipewire (used pipewire during gnome install as recommended, then followed wiki setup for pipewire-alsa and pipewire-puleaudio packages)

pactl info output:

Re: Primary Volume Does Nothing

What "primary volume level" are you adjusting where exactly? You run a sound server, use the sound server tools for adjusting the volume, like pavucontrol or pactl (or the normal gnome mixer, that one should integrate with pipewire as well -- speaking of, I faintly remember gnome mandates gst-plugin-pipewire for that, is that installed?). Trying to do this directly with amixer will not properly map with the volume logistics they would set up. If that works properly you do not need to drill down to the distinct amixer controls. If that doesn't work correctly then the mappings/heuristics of your card are wrong, what's your output of

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
aplay -lL
amixer -c0 #Or the index of the correct card
pactl list sinks

Re: Primary Volume Does Nothing

Yes, the assumptions you laid out seem to be spot on.

The primary volume level I'm trying to adjust is the gnome(?) primary level - e.g. the volume slider in the upper right hand corner menu of gnome (can also be adjusted using the physical volume controls on the laptop).  Again, this volume control has no effect currently on the volume of various audio outputs like spotify sounds, chromium sounds or firefox sounds.

Using gnome volume settings (or pavucontrol) I can indeed control the individual volume of a given audio output individually (like spotify, firefox or chromium sounds).

The statement about the "mappings/heuristics of the card are wrong" sounds accurate.  This is on a fairly new laptop Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 10, maybe the audio device setup isn't detected or compatible with the default or something.

FWIW, I don't have the aplay or amixer apps installed.  I think I'd have to uninstall pipewire and re-install alsa to get these?

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*

                     USER PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/controlC0: joe 1518 F.... wireplumber
/dev/snd/seq: joe 1517 F.... pipewire

Re: Primary Volume Does Nothing

Pipewire doesn't replace ALSA, ALSA is the basis of everything. For getting these tools you can install alsa-utils they will give more lower level info. In particular the exact mixer names will be interesting. Normally the one global card control pipewire/pulse exposes should logically map across the physical mixers you'll get from amixer -c0 maybe they use some non-standard naming here.

Re: Primary Volume Does Nothing

I see what you mean about Alsa being the basis, I originally thought it was in the same bucket as PulseAudio in regards to Pipewire replacing it's functionality, when in reality it was just the pulseaudio-alsa client that was replaced.

While I see some interesting information in the amixer output, not sure what to do with it.  Thanks for your help and insight.
