[SOLVED] cryptsetup open doesn't recognize a pass given in luksFormat

I am having a bizarre problem. I've made a small (40MB) empty file in /tmp/file , then I do:

cryptsetup luksFormat /tmp/file

I enter and verify a simple password, like 1234. Then:

cryptsetup open /tmp/file test

And after trying the same password this gives me 'No key available with this keyphrase'.

I've tried this whole procedure ad nauseam with different passwords. The same happens using a proper nvme disk device instead of a tmp file. I've tried different keyboards. I've ran memtest and mprime on this machine indicating everything is stable. I am starting to doubt my sanity... any ideas what could have gone wrong? Thanks.

So, it was system instability after all. I had run the memtest at default single cpu settings. As soon as I switched to parallel errors started popping up. So, all is well. Or not. smile Anyway, topic solved.
