I tried three different window managers (xmonad, i3, xfwm4). In all of them I'm unable to use control, alt, or win key to activate window manager actions. For example, in xmonad win-key - shift - p should lauch gmrun but it doesn't.
How can I go about figuring out what is going on?
I've used xev to see what events are being sent when I press a key. There doesn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary. Control key generates control, win key generates super, and alt generates alt.
I'm able to type into apps. Application shortcuts seem to work normally. For example, I can switch tabs in firefox with alt-N.
So that's my question, why do the window managers not recognize modifier keys?
